CITY OF TALLMADGE Recreation Center Governing Board July 14, 2022 10:00 a.m. Council Chambers Meeting Chaired By: Mayor Kline Minutes: Tish Rowland I. Call to Order: The Mayor called the meeting to order at 10:03 a.m. II. Voting Members Present: Mayor Kline, Assistant Law Director Melody Briand, Director of Finance Mollie Gilbride, Director of Public Service Rorar, President of Council Loughry Not Present: School Members Bill Johnson and Jeff Manion Others Present: Mark Salerno Non-Voting Members: Parks and Recreation Superintendent Jessica Simmons, Administrative Assistant Dan Enos III. Adoption of Minutes for February 7, 2022: Mark Salerno moved to approve the minutes of February 7th meeting; seconded by Mollie Gilbride. Vote to approve: 5/0. IV. Old Business: a. Past Event Updates: Jessica: The Easter Egg Hunt and Touch a Truck went well, concerts on the Circle have started and Summer Camp is underway. b. Staff Updates: Jessica: Our new Recreation Coordinator Kelly Ward is doing an excellent job. She has kept everything organized and we are quite happy to have her. We are struggling at Maca with having staff that want to work. V. New Business: Price Changes a. Pickleball Lessons: Jessica: We started Pickleball lessons earlier this year. It has been very popular, classes all had waiting lists so we want to offer it again this Fall and Winter. Due to the high demand for the classes and the courts during that time we want to raise the rates. The majority of participants are elderly so we feel that a $5 increase is appropriate. Mollie Gilbride moved to approve; seconded by Mike Rorar. Vote to approve: 5/0. b. Basketball – Men’s League and Community All Star League: Jessica: During the All Star League our Referee Assigner passed away so a new Assigner came in. We found we had been drastically underpaying our officials by as much as 50% compared to other leagues in the area. We’ve seen about a 40% increase in these programs in referee costs alone. We are getting better referees with better control over the games, which will aid us in the future. To avoid sticker shock we’re proposing raising registration fees for each league by $75 per team to help cover the additional referee costs. Mollie Gilbride: When was the last increase? Jessica: The Community All Star League rates were raised within the last 3 years, it’s been longer for the Men’s League. Gilbride: Has there been discussion about being our own Assigner to avoid some of these fees? Jessica: Randy is investigating that. Mollie Gilbride moved to approve; seconded by Mark Salerno. Vote to approve: 5/0. VI. Monthly Reports a. TRC Membership Report: Jessica: We are up, especially at Maca, this year. Our non- insurance based memberships are down compared to last year for June. We are just as busy so that may because people are aging into retirement age and converting from non- insurance to insurance based. Overall we are up memberships. b. Financial Report: Mollie: We are returning to more normal operations at TRC. Losses from the June report are less than last year and 2019. Memberships are still behind 2019, but for the most part we are seeing a slow and steady comeback. Covid is still a factor for many people. c. Donation Request Report: Dan: We’ve had more donation requests this year than last year. We’ve donated Gift Certificates to five events since our last meeting, Local 2L Union Annual Picnic, Union Night, Summit DD, Tallmadge Athletic Boosters Night at the Races, and Tallmadge Force Softball Raffle. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 10:13 a.m.
