Youth Council Advisor Tessier to share details about Youth Council responsibilities at Pioneer Days on October 19, 2024. PUBLIC COMMENTS This is the time for the public to address the Youth Council on issues within the jurisdiction of the Youth Councnil that are NOT on this agenda. All comments are to be directed to the Youth Council and shall not consist of any personal attacks. Members of the public are expected to maintain a professional, courteous decorum during their comments. There is a time limitation of three minutes per person. If you haven’t already done so, please fill out name and address slips and give them to the Secretary to the Youth Council. The Youth Council is prohibited by State law from taking action or discussing items not included on the printed agenda. Public comments on specific agenda items will be deferred until consideration of the item on the agenda. BUSINESS 2. Coleman calls the meeting to order at 4:00 pm. Youth Council member Vivianna Hermosillo leads the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll Call - The following Youth Council Members were present: Isaac Coleman, Tallulah Coleman, Thomas Elkins, Jaguar Goodwin, Judah Goodwin, Vivianna Hermosillo, Jax Langdon, Audrina McConville, Pearl Sullivan, William Sumption, Brett Viloria, Truman Walsh. Absent: Izzabella Hargrove Changes to the Agenda - None. ANNOUNCEMENTS Youth Council Advisor Tessier shared that City Manager James will be attending the November 20th Youth Council meeting as a special guest and asked youth to read Atomic Habits by James Clear to be prepared for a book discussion at the meeting. Youth Council Advisor Tessier shared that the City Olympics will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025. PUBLIC COMMENTS - None. BUSINESS 1. Approval of Minutes of the Youth Council Meeting Held on September 18, 2024. Motion to approve the meeting minutes by Youth Council member Sumption, motion seconded by Youth Council member Walsh. 2. Chairperson Isaac Coleman to share ideas on how to support FIND Food Bank. There has been no email reply from FIND contact person. 3. Youth Council Advisor Tessier to share an update on Clean-up Day - Trash for Cash situation. The Youth Council is not able to receive money from the Trash for Cash program because the organization is not a 501(c)(3) organization. Members decided to do a second clean-up day on a Saturday in January. The date is to be determined. This clean-up event will be in addition to the planned April 26th clean-up day. 4. Youth Council member Hermosillo to provide an update on Institute for Inquiry. Both Youth Council members Hermosillo and T. Coleman reported that they have reached out to the Institute of Inquiry director through a variety of mediums but have not heard back from her. Youth Council member Hargrove was absent from the meeting, so the topic will be tabled until next meeting. DISCUSSION AND POTENTIAL ACTION ITEMS 6. Social Media Poll Specifics. RECOMMENDATION: Create the language for the Social Media polls for City Olympics. Youth Council member Hermosillo recommended using a poll creator like Google forms. There was a discussion among members about using polls on Instagram versus Google forms with a decision to put a Google form link onto social media pages to ensure integrity of results. There was a discussion about the verbiage of the poll questions, with phrasing such as, "What events would you be interested in? Select all that apply." with a list of options. Youth Council member Elkins will take the lead on creating the polls with assistance from others including Youth Council members Hermosillo and Walsh. There was a discussion about the challenges of creating a Facebook page with recommendations to either try to create a business account or start with an Instagram account first. Youth Council Advisor Tessier will create an Instagram account and share the login with the social media manager Elkins. There was a discussion about swimming events at the pool and Youth Council Advisor Tessier will reach out to the Aquatics Manger about using lifeguards who work on base as an option for the City Olympic events. 7. City Olympics Marketing Plan. RECOMMENDATION: Come up with concrete marketing ideas. Youth Council member Walsh recommended advertising on Z107.7 and Youth Council Advisor Tessier suggested members going live on-air with information about the event in March. There was discussion about advertising in schools with flyers, all of which need to be approved by the School District first. Youth Council member Hermosillo shared that she has graphic design experience and can help create the flyers. Youth Council member Elkins suggested reaching out to Kurt at the Desert Trail for promotion. There was discussion about using Facebook groups to advertise to reach a broad audience such as the Morongo Basin Homeschool Group and What's Going on in 29 Palms. Youth Council member Jaguar Goodwin suggested advertising at local businesses. Youth Council member T. Coleman said that her volleyball team had good luck doing that and many businesses were open to putting up flyers for events. Youth Council member Hermosillo recommended putting up flyers at restaurants and Youth Council member Elkins recommended putting up flyers at the Twentynine Palms Visitor's Center. 8. Team Building Activity. RECOMMENDATION: Divide into teams and play "It's in the Bag." Youth Council members played "It's in the Bag" as a team building activity. Page 2 of 3 Page 4 of 5  Youth Council - Regular Meeting October 2, 2024 YOUTH COUNCIL ADVISOR COMMENTS Youth Council Advisor Tessier asked Youth Council members to read Atomic Habits before November 20th meeting with City Manager. She will email updates regarding Pioneer Day responsibilities on October 19th. Plan to meet at Oasis Elementary School at 9am wearing blue polos to participate in the Parade. She asked who would like to volunteer on October 20th at the Historic Plaza Car Show. The event runs 12-5 with 1 hour set up and 1 hour tear down – 11am-6pm. Youth Council members will run carnival games. The Friends of the Historic Plaza are requesting eight volunteers. She suggested that Youth Council members attend different city meetings.
