TYBEE ISLAND HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION Meeting Minutes Date & Time: 7/12/21; 6:00 PM Present: Fidelia Fowler, Mary Anne Butler, Spec Hosti, Marty Harrell, Michelle Owens, Sarah Jones Absent: Holly Grell-Lawe, Anthony Turpin Citizen Observers: Carol Nathan, Forever Tybee; Pat Leiby, TybeeMLK Human Rights Organization Location: Public Safety Building, 78 Van Horne Call to order Meeting called to order at 6:00 PM. Minutes for Consideration – June 14, 2021; Quorum not present Old Business Mid Island Historic Designation Michelle Owens shared that the application for historic designation is still in progress with Quartrefoil Consulting. Story Board Signage Project – Sara is still conducting research. The process has been slower than she hoped. Equity/Inclusion Initiative - The Juneteenth Wade-In event was a success. More than 400 people attended events throughout the weekend. Pat Leiby of Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization thanked the city for its partnership in the event. Michelle Owens informed the board of an upcoming meeting to get a historical marker for Lazaretto Creek. The board instructed Michelle to contact Julia Pearce and ask if an HPC member could attend the planning meetings. Historic Building Maintenance – Michelle Owens informed the board that the city has awarded a contract to Braddy Electric to repair and upgrade the electrical outlets on Tybrisa Street and Strand Avenue. The project is delayed however, due to a shortage of electrical supplies. Sarah requested that HPC invite the city manager to the August meeting to get an update on the status of the old school building/cafeteria. Special Districts – The commission will revisit this project in September and plan a workshop to explore the various types of special districts that might help preserve older Tybee neighborhoods like North Campbell Subdivision. Permit Review Update Sarah Jones reviewed and supported demolition of a permit for 19 Logan – an older, dilapidated house with little remaining historic value.
