Thank you for 9 the support of this wonderful, wonderful 10 Administration that Mayor Stack has created a 11 legacy for the City of Union City, a City that 12 improves day by day by day. 13 And I want you to give a big hand to the 14 man who leads this City, our Mayor and State 15 Senator, the Honorable Brian P. Stack. 16 (Applause.) 17 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: Before we get 18 started I would like to introduce some of the 19 persons that are here with us. 20 Joining us on stage is Mr. Stanley Sanger, 21 Superintendent of Schools. 22 (Applause.) 23 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: Police Chief 24 Richard Molinari. 25 Father Thomas Levine.  7 1 Judge Lilia A. Munoz. 2 Mr. Dennis McAlevy. 3 (Applause.) 4 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: Also, elected 5 officials in the audience, our Assemblymen, Raj 6 Mukherji and Carmelo Garcia. 7 Ladies and gentlemen, the Board of 8 Commissioners in the City of Union City, 9 Commissioner Tilo Rivas. 10 Commissioner Margie Martinetti. 11 Commissioner Celin Valdivia. 12 And let’s give a big hand for our Mayor and 13 State Senator, the Honorable Brian P. Stack. 14 (Applause.) 15 MAYOR STACK: What about you? Lucio? What 16 about you? 17 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: I’m just Lucio. 18 Lucio Fernandez. 19 And for welcoming remarks please welcome a 20 great friend to the City of Union City, Union 21 City’s own special Superintendent of Schools, Mr. 22 Stanley Sanger. 23 (Applause.) 24 MR. SANGER: Thank you, Lucio. 25 And I don’t know if I’ll be able to top  8 1 that but it is a pleasure and an honor to welcome 2 you all here this evening to this very special 3 day in the history of Union City. 4 The people of Union City have spoken again, 5 overwhelmingly with 9,000 votes of confidence, to 6 our unopposed incumbents and what a great 7 compliment that was for the Mayor and these 8 Commissioners. 9 For 14 consecutive years we have been under 10 the outstanding leadership of Brian P. Stack and 11 his Administration; 14 years of growth, 12 progressive initiatives and a caring for the 13 community, which has proven to be legendary 14 throughout the state of New Jersey. 15 As a person who has been part of Union City 16 for 41 years, I have never witnessed what has 17 occurred over this last 14 year period of time. 18 Visits by Governor McGreevy, Governor 19 Codey, Governor Corzine, Governor Christie. 20 And visits by national leaders, U.S. 21 Senator Bob Menendez, U.S. Congressman Albio 22 Sires, U.S. Senator Cory Booker, General Colin 23 Powell, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. 24 And this is just to name a few. Have all 25 flocked to Union City to be supportive of the  9 1 resurgence of our urban city which has been home 2 to such a diverse, proud community. 3 Quality of life has improved dramatically. 4 New parks and public facilities, as evidenced by 5 the recent opening of the Washington Park Sports 6 Complex and the Community Pool on 11 th Street. 7 Again, just to name a few. 8 Modernization of our infrastructure with 9 new streets, sidewalks and safety lighting 10 throughout the community. 11 And, most importantly, -- and let me 12 emphasize this -- establishing a culture of 13 ongoing responsiveness to the needs of the entire 14 community due to the outstanding efforts of Mayor 15 and Senator Brian P. Stack. 16 (Applause.) 17 MR. SANGER: As Superintendent of Schools, 18 in collaboration with Senator/Mayor Stack and our 19 Commissioners and our great Board of Education, 20 we have been able to construct a highly 21 recognized, high-exceeding urban school district 22 recognized at the state and national levels. 23 Ladies and gentlemen, we can all be proud 24 of these accomplishments but most importantly we 25 could all be confident that the future will be  10 1 even brighter and more successful under the 2 leadership of Brian P. Stack and Lucio Fernandez, 3 Tilo Rivas, Maryury Martinetti and Celin 4 Valdivia. 5 Congratulations to all and thank you to all 6 of you and the people of Union City for once 7 again showing your unwavering support and 8 confidence in this Administration. 9 The future is bright for Union City. Join 10 in the celebration this evening. Be festive. We 11 all have a lot to be proud of. When I call the Commissioner, would 21 their each respective families to come and join 22 the Commissioner center stage. 23 There’s two ways you can come up. You can 24 come these stairs here -- Danny will show you or 25 you can come up the stairs to your right.  11 1 The first Commissioner being sworn in will 2 be sworn in by Corporation Counsel, Christine 3 Vanek. Stack. 20 MAYOR STACK: Thank you. Thank you very 21 much everyone. 22 Thank you very much. Thank you. 23 A tremendous thank you to Union City. 24 A special thanks -- I have to wait until 25 they’re back seated but a special thanks to my  15 1 fiancé, Mercedes. 2 And a special thank you also to my Mom; my 3 Mom’s not able to be here with us this evening. 4 She getting better and she’s in rehab right now 5 but her heart is here; I know that. 6 (Applause.) 7 MAYOR STACK: Special thank you to Viviana 8 (phonetic), Aliah (phonetic), Myah (phonetic) and 9 Cada (phonetic). 10 Thank you for being here, Joanna 11 (phonetic). 12 A very special thank you to all of my 13 campaign volunteers; the hundreds -- I wish I 14 could name all of you this evening but the list 15 too long. When I say hundreds, the hundreds of 16 you that walk the streets every single night 17 knocking on doors, registering voters. 18 And how could I forget all the women with 19 the phone calls; every night without fail, making 20 those phone calls. I know the women are with me 21 in the campaign; I think their husbands want to 22 beat me up. 23 Thank you very much. Thank you. 24 A special thank you to Mark Albiez, my 25 Chief of Staff, who’s there with may day in and  16 1 day out, countless hours a day. 2 Dennis McAlevy always says he doesn’t know 3 how Mark does it there. 4 A special thank you to Justin; Justin 5 Mercado, my friend. 6 Placido, Alex Velasquez and -- thank you 7 very much, guys. 8 Someone special to me, very special to me, 9 who has never asked me for anything. Just gives 10 me his friendship. A gentleman. He’s tough but 11 he’s a complete gentleman. A great friend and an 12 outstanding lawyer who swore me in. That’s my 13 friend Dennis McAlevy. 14 Dennis -- Dennis may not realize this but 15 we’ve been friends close to 30 years; 30 years. 16 I was a teenager when I met Dennis. I had a 17 little bit of a skimmish at a polling place on 9th 18 and Palisade at that time and everyone told me 19 there’s a great lawyer and I went to Dennis 20 McAlevy. He’s been my friend since. Not only a 21 great lawyer but a great friend to me. 22 Thank you very much, Dennis. And thank you 23 for being here tonight. 24 Thank you, thank you to the best Board of 25 Commissioners I could ask for. Sharing the  17 1 vision. Sticking with me every step of the way. 2 Working together to make this City what it is. 3 Thanks to the Board of Commissioners; I couldn’t 4 do it without them. 5 I would be remiss if I didn’t thank in a 6 special recognition to our Police Chief, Rich 7 Molinari, for his leadership in our Department. 8 The Chief’s willingness to listen to 9 residents, no matter how small a problem may be. 10 It amazes he takes time out to call everyone I 11 give him. I know he gets nervous when he sees 12 this -- this color paper comes down to his office 13 and he knows it’s a complaint. But he follows up 14 on each one of them. He’s done a terrific job in 15 running the Union City Police Department. I hope 16 we have him for many, many years to come. 17 I would also like to thank all the City 18 employees who are very dedicated to the City. 19 But a special thank you to a group of people that 20 are very special to me and that’s our Public 21 Works Department, our Parks Department and our 22 crossing guards who work very, very hard on 23 behalf of the taxpayers of the City and do a 24 tremendous job. 25 The Union City Board of Education has made  18 1 me very, very proud; specifically, Mr. Sanger. 2 Without his leadership, his experience and his 3 approach to education, Union City wouldn’t be 4 where it is today. Sandy is a very humble 5 individual -- Sandy Sanger. 6 And I have to tell you one thing. He’s 7 affected tens of thousands of lives over the 8 years. Not only being a teacher or principal, an 9 assistant superintendent but as superintendent, 10 he’s done a magnificent job. And the entire 11 Board of Education, Silvia Abbato. And I say 12 this all the time, all the way down to the lunch 13 person. 14 But a special thank you also to the 15 teachers in Union City. I think we have the best 16 teachers in the state of New Jersey. 17 You know today -- today when I sat down I 18 said I have to write some notes because I want to 19 say a lot of different things tonight. And I 20 usually don’t write a speech; I usually go off 21 the top of my head -- that doesn’t get me into 22 trouble. 23 But words cannot express how it feels right 24 now to be standing up here and re-elected. Sandy 25 mentioned being here for 14 years; it’s a great  19 1 honor. To be chosen to lead our community, along 2 with the Commissioners, is a tremendous feeling. 3 My love for this City, from the bottom of 4 my heart, it only grows. I talk about Union City 5 no matter where I am, which is -- 6 I don’t leave Union City that often. The 7 only other place really I go is Trenton. But 8 when I’m in Trenton I’m talking about Union City. 9 And the people of Union City are the greatest. 10 They stand with us through the tough times, the 11 good times, the bad times; whatever it is, they 12 stand with us. 13 More often than not when I walk through the 14 streets of Union City it feels like a big family. 15 I don’t have a large family, so all of you are my 16 extended family. 17 (Applause.) 18 MAYOR STACK: The residents of this City, 19 all of you, get involved. When you see something 20 that’s unjust or whether it’s just to help a 21 neighbor or help a neighbor shovel out a car or 22 help a senior citizen, you’re right there. I 23 wouldn’t trade places with anyone. For all the 24 money in the world, I wouldn’t give up being 25 Mayor of Union City and representing you.  20 1 You know most nights I get home late and I 2 wake up early in the morning. 3 Mercedes could attest to that. 4 And when I wake up in the morning I can’t 5 wait to get to City Hall. And on Sundays I 6 always promise I’m going to go for coffee and a 7 bagel and I try to go down to Hoboken or I’ll go 8 to one of the bodegas in Union City and I have a 9 sense of guilt not being in City Hall on Sunday. 10 So, I always take my phone calls with me; I 11 take work with me. You know I guess you could 12 call me a workaholic. 13 But you know something? When you’re doing 14 what you love, it’s not work; it’s not work. I 15 never feel like it’s work because I’m doing what 16 I love to do. 17 And I was fortunate enough -- and at one 18 time Marty and I were talking about this, I was 19 fortunate enough to know at a young age what I 20 wanted to do. I didn’t know I wanted to be the 21 Mayor of Union City but I knew I wanted to be 22 involved somewhere. Whether it was being a 23 police officer or being a firefighter; I always 24 knew I wanted to be involved in government. 25 No other job in the world is more rewarding  21 1 than being the Mayor of Union City. 2 I’m not going to lie to you, some days -- 3 some days are tough. 4 Mercedes can tell you when I get home 5 sometimes I’m not in the best -- in the best of 6 attitudes. But you know something? When I wake 7 up in the morning, it’s a brand new day and I try 8 to go back and do something positive. 9 Seeing the children getting a great 10 education in Union City again, thanks to Sandy 11 Sanger, Silvia Abbato and the entire Board of 12 Education. 13 Speaking of children, it’s just tremendous. 14 Whether they’re playing in a park, swimming on 9th 15 and Palisade Avenue, the beautiful high school 16 that we have in Union City, the new field on 2nd 17 and Palisade that was mentioned earlier, it makes 18 a tough job being a hands-on Mayor well worth it. 19 When you pass the park, whether it’s Duarte 20 Park, whether it’s any of our parks -- and I roll 21 down the window whenever I do and I hear the 22 laughter of children, there’s nothing better. 23 And that’s what makes it all worth it. 24 Whether it’s the schools, whether it’s the 25 parks, whether it’s paving. When we’re improving  22 1 quality of life here, I know individually we’re 2 affecting everybody’s life in this room. And 3 that’s what’s most important day in and day out. 4 (Applause.) 5 MAYOR STACK: Just knowing that we have 6 your confidence and your trust is something that 7 money can’t buy. The material things you can’t 8 buy. When you have a level of trust and you have 9 a level of confidence that you’ve shown in us and 10 we will guarantee you won’t be disappointed in 11 what we produce over the next four years. 12 Before we finished the field on 2nd and 13 Palisade, I was already thinking about the next 14 project that we could do in Union City that 15 benefits the residents here. 16 Nothing makes me feel better than when I 17 walk around the community and somebody says, you 18 know what Brian, I see my block getting better. 19 But on the other hand, I like when people 20 call me about their complaints. And I know 21 sometimes those around me, whether it’s Mark or 22 Justin or Alex, and I tell people call me, call 23 me if you have a complaint. And I tell the 24 workers in Headquarters and they can tell you -- 25 many of them are here today -- don’t come back  23 1 and tell me who likes me; tell me who’s upset 2 with me so I can go and find out how we can do a 3 better job and how we could try to please. 4 Is it possible to please everyone? No. 5 But we’re going to try our best. 6 (Applause.) 7 MAYOR STACK: And believe me when I tell 8 you, at the end of the day, I just hope that we 9 make somebody’s life a little bit better. That 10 we made a difference in Union City. That’s 11 what’s most important. 12 I don’t make empty promises and I think 13 many of you have known that over the last 14 14 years that I’ve been the Mayor and many of you 15 who have known me before that know I don’t make 16 an empty promise. 17 But one guarantee I can give you, is you’ll 18 have my heart and soul 24/7 over the next four 19 years as long as you’ll have me as your Mayor. 20 (Applause.) 21 MAYOR STACK: Again, I hope you feel 22 tonight what we feel. We have a lot of 23 excitement. We know a lot of great things are 24 going to happen. We have a lot of announcements 25 that will be coming up the end of this year,  24 1 early into next year, about new projects that 2 we’re working on. I just talked about new ideas. 3 But what’s most important is keep the 4 contact with us. The dialogue that we have, keep 5 that going. Because that’s what makes the 6 difference here in Union City. 7 Tonight I thank you from the bottom of my 8 heart for having me as your Mayor. I feel that 9 I’m luckiest guy in the world. And I thank all 10 of you for making that possible. 11 (Applause.) 12 MAYOR STACK: The day after the election 13 some people said to me, Brian, are you going to 14 take a vacation now? 15 I think Dennis said it to me. 16 Are you going to take a vacation now? 17 And I said I’ll take a day off or so but I 18 haven’t taken a day off because I don’t want 19 anybody to think because my face is red I was 20 down the shore over the weekend because I wasn’t. 21 You know where I was today? I was with Joe 22 Isola on the viaduct; we were making a repair 23 with the fire truck about a hundred feet below -- 24 I should say a hundred feet up below the -- the 25 Firefighters Memorial Park, some of the spray  25 1 equipment was broken from the winter; some of the 2 pipes had snapped due to being frozen. And we 3 made those repairs today. And I saw the 4 dedication of Joe being there as a volunteer. Of 5 everybody else being involved, the Chief getting 6 involved, everybody getting involved. Getting 7 involved not so much just to have our park 8 repaired, but to make sure that this weekend, 9 come Memorial Day Weekend, for the families who 10 can’t afford to go away, that their children will 11 have a park to play in and have a great time this 12 weekend. And that’s what’s -- 13 (Applause.) 14 MAYOR STACK: Thank you very much and -- 15 (Applause.) 16 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: A big hand for our 17 Mayor, Brian P. Stack. 18 (Applause.) 19 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: On behalf of the 20 Commissioners I want to reiterate a thank you to 21 certain people. 22 Guys, on behalf of us Commissioners, 23 Justin, Mark, Placido, Daniel and Alex -- thank 24 you, man, for working so hard day in and day out, 25 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  26 1 Thank you very much. 2 (Whereupon, there was a pause in the 3 proceedings.) 4 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: Also, we want to 5 thank two unsung heroes that makes this run, our 6 Corporation Counsel, Christine Vanek. 7 (Applause.) 8 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: And our Acting 9 City Clerk, Dominick Cantatore. 10 (Applause.) 11 COMMISSIONER FERNANDEZ: Finally, thank you 12 to the Colin Powell administration, Teresita Diaz 13 and Mike Peragine for helping us put this event 14 together.
