February 13, 2018 MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING URBANA PUBLIC ARTS COMMISSION APPROVED DATE: February 13, 2018 TIME: 4:30 p.m. PLACE: City Council Chambers, Urbana City Building, 400 South Vine Street, Urbana, Illinois MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Hedlund, Eric Jakobsson, Jenelle Orcherton, Jason Patterson, Patricia Sammann, Jessica Snyder MEMBERS ABSENT: Sara Jones MEMBERS EXCUSED: Erica Cooper-Peyton, Katie Harrell STAFF PRESENT: Brandon Boys, Economic Development Manager; Rachel Storm, Public Arts Coordinator; Sukiya J. Reid, Recording Secretary OTHERS PRESENT: Lauren Chambers, Rachel Fuller, Jancie Philippus 1. CALL TO ORDER, ROLL CALL AND DECLARATION OF QUORUM The Urbana Public Arts Commission was called to order at 4:33 p.m. by Ms. Sammann. Ms. Reid took roll and a quorum was declared present. 2. CHANGES TO AGENDA There were none. 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING The minutes of the January 9, 2018 meeting were reviewed by the Commission. Ms. Sammann noted that under the Communications/Grant Presentation section, she was listed as the one who introduced the Grant recipient. However, in her absence at that meeting, Mr. Patterson was the one who did the introduction so that should be changed. Ms. Sammann moved to approve the minutes as corrected. Mr. Patterson seconded the motion. All Commission members present were in favor of approval, and the minutes were unanimously approved as corrected. 4. PUBLIC INPUT There was none. 1 February 13, 2018 5. COMMUNICATIONS  Presentation by 2017 Arts Grant Recipient: Lauren Chambers, The Urbana Free Library Ms. Sammann introduced Lauren Chambers, Adult & Youth Services Librarian at The Urbana Free Library. Ms. Chambers gave a slideshow presentation on her event which featured New York Times best-selling young adult author, Maggie Stiefvater. The event took place on November 15th at the Urbana Free Library. Maggie Stiefvater spoke about her latest book, All the Crooked Saints, and answered audience questions about her books and the novel writing process. She followed the talk with a book signing. There were 175 people in attendance. Ms. Chambers thanked the Commission for the grant received. At the conclusion of the report, questions and comments from the Commission were heard.  Presentation by 2017 Arts Grant Recipient: Jancie Philippus, University of Illinois School of Music Ms. Sammann introduced Jancie Philippus, Public Engagement Coordinator at the University of Illinois School of Music. Ms. Philippus gave a slideshow presentation on her project titled, ISYM Hip-Hop which took place from July 15-22, 2017. She stated that the Illinois Summer Youth Music Program is always looking to expand the diversity of their curriculum. Adding this hip-hop addition to the program was a great success. 9 students participated in the project, and they all wrote, recorded, and performed original music in one week’s time! The final performance took place at the Canopy Club, and gave them a real-life Hip-Hop musician experience. Following the camp, a few of the students have actually been booked to perform shows in the community. Ms. Philippus thanked the Commission for the grant received. At the conclusion of the report, questions and comments from the Commission were heard.  Presentation by Staff: Monthly Progress Report Ms. Storm presented the City staff’s monthly progress report to the Commission, outlining projects in process, recent requests and recommendations from the public, staff activities, and upcoming events. 6. OLD BUSINESS There was none. 7. NEW BUSINESS There was none. 8. ANNOUNCEMENTS Ms. Sammann announced that the University YMCA’s Friday Forum for this semester is themed around Art and Activism. Commission member Jason Patterson will be speaking on March 2nd about “The Compounding American Moral Debt.” The series takes place every Friday at noon, at the University YMCA. 2 February 13, 2018 9. ADJOURNMENT Ms. Sammann made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. Ms. Hedlund seconded the motion.
