March 13, 2018 MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING URBANA PUBLIC ARTS COMMISSION APPROVED DATE: March 13, 2018 TIME: 4:30 p.m. PLACE: City Council Chambers, Urbana City Building, 400 South Vine Street, Urbana, Illinois MEMBERS PRESENT: Erica Cooper-Peyton, Katie Harrell, Barbara Hedlund, Eric Jakobsson, Sara Jones, Jason Patterson, Patricia Sammann, Jessica Snyder MEMBERS ABSENT: Jenelle Orcherton STAFF PRESENT: Brandon Boys, Economic Development Manager; Rachel Storm, Public Arts Coordinator; Sukiya J. Reid, Recording Secretary OTHERS PRESENT: Aisha Chiaramonte, Matt Cho, Mallory Morris 1. CALL TO ORDER, ROLL CALL AND DECLARATION OF QUORUM The Urbana Public Arts Commission was called to order at 4:30 p.m. by Ms. Sammann. Ms. Reid took roll and a quorum was declared present. 2. CHANGES TO AGENDA Ms. Storm stated that the Mallory Morris Grant Presentation would be moved up to the first spot under Communications, and the other two presentations would follow in the order listed. 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING The minutes of the February 13, 2018 meeting were reviewed by the Commission. With no changes proposed, Ms. Sammann made a motion to approve the minutes. Ms. Hedlund seconded the motion. All Commission members present were in favor of approval, and the minutes were unanimously approved as presented. 4. PUBLIC INPUT There was none. 1  March 13, 2018 5. COMMUNICATIONS  Presentation by 2017 Arts Grant Recipient: Mallory Morris, One People’s Summer Arts Camp, RUBIK’s Exhibition, Colorful Together Ms. Sammann introduced Mallory Morris, board member for One People and one of the directors for their Summer Arts Camp. She gave a brief background on how the One People’s Summer Arts Camp was started. The camp is free and located in a geographically accessible location for as many students ages 9-14 as possible. Ms. Morris stated that volunteers come together from all over the community to provide this unique experience for students. Over the past several years, the camp has covered vocal performance, creative writing, dance, bucket drumming, visual arts, engineering, and media arts. Students get to choose one path to follow for the entire week, and they are matched with a professional creative coach in that field for 15 contact hours. The goal is to create a product that they will be able to present to the rest of the camp and family members. Camp sessions are offered in the evening, and dinner is provided every night. At the end of the 2017 camp, the artwork was displayed at the Independent Media Center in Urbana. Ms. Morris thanked the Commission for the grant received. At the conclusion of the report, questions and comments from the Commission were heard.  Presentation by 2017 Arts Grant Recipient: Matt Cho, Urbanalove Ms. Sammann introduced Owner-Developer, Matt Cho. He gave a presentation on the 4th year of Urbanalove Summer Movie Nights. Free, family-friendly movies are presented over the summer in downtown Urbana. Mr. Cho thanked the Commission for the grant received. At the conclusion of the report, questions and comments from the Commission were heard.  Presentation by 2017 Arts Grant Recipient: Matt Cho, Sipyard Ms. Sammann introduced Owner-Developer, Matt Cho. He gave a presentation on his project titled, Sipyard which is an outdoor beer garden, created with four shipping containers inside a graffiti gallery. This provides a nice outdoor space for the community, and a place for artist to express themselves. Mr. Cho thanked the Commission for the grant received. At the conclusion of the report, questions and comments from the Commission were heard.  Presentation by 2017 Arts Grant Recipient: Aisha Chiaramonte, Capoeira Angola of Illinois , Capoeira Angola 4 Kids Ms. Sammann introduced artist, Aisha Chiaramonte. She gave a grant presentation on her project titled, Capoeira Angola 4 Kids. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music. For this project, five classes and a final performance took place at 4 Urbana elementary schools. Ms. Chiaramonte stated that one of her goals is to have it presented at all the schools. She thanked the Commission for the grant received. At the conclusion of the report, questions and comments from the Commission were heard.  Presentation by Staff: Monthly Progress Report Ms. Storm presented the City staff’s monthly progress report to the Commission, outlining projects in process, recent requests and recommendations from the public, staff activities, and upcoming events. 2  March 13, 2018  Discussion: Urbana Arts Grants Program 2018 Ms. Storm presented the 2018 Urbana Arts Grants Program Recipients to the Commission. A total of $127, 479 was requested from the Public Arts Program, but only $47, 500 was available to distribute. A total of 35 projects were funded. Ms. Storm briefly reported on the preliminary information for each recipient under each of the four categories. 6. OLD BUSINESS There was none. 7. NEW BUSINESS There was none. 8. ANNOUNCEMENTS There were none. 9. ADJOURNMENT Ms. Sammann made a motion that the meeting be adjourned. Ms. Jones seconded the motion.
