CITY OF URBANA, ILLINOIS SUSTAINABILITY ADVISORY COMMISSION Engineering Conference Room, Urbana Public Works Building Tuesday, October 11, 2016 Commissioners Present: Chairperson Marya Ryan, Vice Chair Stephen Wald, Beth Meschewski, Todd Rusk, Andrew Stumpf Commissioners Absent: Stacy Gloss, Morgan Johnston Staff Present: Scott Tess, Kate Brickman Call to Order, Roll Call, and Declaration of Quorum The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. Kate Brickman called the roll and a quorum was present. Changes to the Agenda There were no changes to the agenda. Approval of Minutes Motion was made by Mr. Rusk, second by Ms. Meschewski, to approve the minutes from the September 6, 2016 meeting with corrections. Motion carried. Public Input There was no public input. Communications Presentation on the City’s Stormwater Management Programming Brad Bennett, Assistant City of Urbana Engineer for Drainage and Development, gave a brief presentation on the City of Urbana’s storm water management system. This system includes 129 miles of pipe ranging in diameter from 6 inches to 120 inches, 7,773 manholes and inlets, and two regional stormwater detention basins. The Commission asked questions and discussed the information. Staff Report Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report which included progress on the Climate Action Plan (CAP) Phase 2, highlighting the potential retrofit of existing campus lighting, U.S. Department of Energy Solsmart designation, Monarch Butterfly month proclamation and Mayors for Monarchs activities, and partnerships with existing energy efficiency programs and community groups. Associated with Public Engagement, Tess mentioned staff involvement with the Urbana High School Sustainability Club and a presentation given at the Illinois Municipal League Conference. Additionally, an update on U-Cycle activities was provided. The Report stated November 1, 2016 as the next meeting date. Continuing Business Youth Engagement The discussion concerning youth engagement was continued. At the request of youth representatives, Scott Tess suggested waiting until the next scheduled meeting for a report on progress. New Business Compact of Mayors Climate Hazards Scott Tess distributed a Compact of Mayors document that aims to capture the impact of cities’ collective actions through standardized measurement and reporting of emissions and climate risk. Although the document is asking for some data that has already been collected, the information needs to be applied to the format that the Compact is using in order to be in compliance. Discussion ensued. The commission was in agreement to identify resources that could potentially help with sections of the document. Tess indicated that he would reorganize the information and share by email with different owners/agencies/systems and ask them to make comments on what applies to them. Announcements Mr. Stumpf announced an exclusive preview screening of Leonardo DiCaprio’s newest film, Before the Flood on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in room 407 of the Illini Union. Adjournment There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m. This meeting was recorded.
