Presentation on the City’s Stormwater Management Programming
Brad Bennett, Assistant City of Urbana Engineer for Drainage and Development, gave a brief
presentation on the City of Urbana’s storm water management system. This system includes 129
miles of pipe ranging in diameter from 6 inches to 120 inches, 7,773 manholes and inlets, and
two regional stormwater detention basins.
The Commission asked questions and discussed the information.
Staff Report
Scott Tess gave the monthly Staff Report which included progress on the Climate Action Plan
(CAP) Phase 2, highlighting the potential retrofit of existing campus lighting, U.S. Department
of Energy Solsmart designation, Monarch Butterfly month proclamation and Mayors for
Monarchs activities, and partnerships with existing energy efficiency programs and community
groups.
Associated with Public Engagement, Tess mentioned staff involvement with the Urbana High
School Sustainability Club and a presentation given at the Illinois Municipal League Conference.
Additionally, an update on U-Cycle activities was provided.
The Report stated November 1, 2016 as the next meeting date.
Continuing Business
Youth Engagement
The discussion concerning youth engagement was continued. At the request of youth
representatives, Scott Tess suggested waiting until the next scheduled meeting for a report on
progress.
New Business
Compact of Mayors Climate Hazards
Scott Tess distributed a Compact of Mayors document that aims to capture the impact of cities’
collective actions through standardized measurement and reporting of emissions and climate risk.
Although the document is asking for some data that has already been collected, the information
needs to be applied to the format that the Compact is using in order to be in compliance.
Discussion ensued. The commission was in agreement to identify resources that could potentially
help with sections of the document. Tess indicated that he would reorganize the information and
share by email with different owners/agencies/systems and ask them to make comments on what
applies to them.
