APPROVED December 7, 2016 City of Urbana, Illinois Minutes of the Urbana Tree Commission Meeting Public Works Engineering Conference Room 706 S. Glover Ave. Urbana, IL 61802 Wednesday, September 7, 2016 1:30 p.m. Members Present: Carol Augspurger (acting Chair), Stewart Berlocher, Darin Eastburn, Derek Liebert, Michael Stevenson Members Absent: Barbara Anderson, Jackson Bird, Chair Jeff Dawson Staff Present: Michael Brunk (City of Urbana Arborist), Leslie Cross Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. Roll call was taken. Approval of Meeting Minutes Darrin Eastburn moved to approve the agenda for the March 2, 2106 meeting. Michael Stevenson seconded the motion. The motion was approved by a voice vote. Public Input a. Request from Resident to remove Pin Oak Tree at 301 W. Oregon St. Janet Macomber, 301 W. Oregon St., applied for a permit to remove a City owned Pin Oak tree. The permit was denied by the City Arborist because the tree was deemed healthy with no other concerns. MaComber made a presentation on the issue and the Commission discussed the request. Berlocher moved to table the discussion so that tree may be examined by Commission members for a vote in December. Commission unanimously voted aye to table the discussion. b. Presentation by Lowell Miller of CU Woodshop Supply, Inc. Lowell Miller was the manager at CU Woodshop Supply, Inc. Mr. Miller presented to the Commission the vision of reclamation of urban lumbar and the benefits it would have to the City for its Ash tree removal project. Specifically, Mr. Miller discussed the benefits of milling the City’s own wood to support the Legacy Tree Program and other projects that will be presented to City Staff during the monthly cityscape meetings. Former Business a. Revised Legacy Tree Ordinance to include Park District and Approved Intergovernmental Agreement APPROVED December 7, 2016 Brunk presented the final documents of the revised Legacy Tree Ordinance Revision that included the Park District and Approved Intergovernmental Agreement. New Business a. Status of Urbana EAB Removals Brunk reported that 208 trees exhibiting specific or potential signs signs of EAB were removed as of September 2, 2106. Additionally, Brunk stated that 84 were removed by the Arbor Division, 28 by a local contractor and 33 were DNR. He also noted that he expects the completion of the removals of the remaining EAB as soon as within the year. Additionally, Brunk shared information that approximately 71 trees are still under inspection. b. 2207 S Cottage Grove Burr Oak Legacy Tree Nomination The Commission revisited a legacy tree nomination for a Burr Oak tree locate at 2207 S Cottage Grove. Berlocher moved to recommend approval, Stevenson seconded, and the motion carried. c. Sim Hackberry lumber ready for sale this winter Brunk reported that they would present the sale of the Sim Hackberry lumber to the Mayor during the next City Council meeting. Brunk stated that the lumber would go for $2-$4/board foot. d.
