Main St. Uvalde, TX 78801 The Strategic Planning Committee of the City of Uvalde was called to order on Tuesday April 4, 2023, at 12:00Noon, in the City Hall, Council Chambers, with the following members present: COMMITTEE Rosemberg Risa, III-District 1 MEMBERS Juan Gonzales-District 2 PRESENT: Sergio Porras-District 3 COMMITTEE Raymond Velos-District 5 MEMBERS Jerrell Baker-Mayoral Appointment ABSENT: Mayor Don McLaughlin, Jr.-Council Liaison STAFF Susan Anderson-Director of Planning and Development PRESENT: Sorayda A. Sanchez-City Secretary 1 CALL MEETING TO ORDER 2 NEW BUSINESS 2A. Discuss 2023 Annular Eclipse and 2024 Solar Eclipse. Susan Anderson, Director of Planning and Development and the Strategic Planning Committee met to discuss the upcoming 2023 Annular Eclipse and the 2024 Solar Eclipse. Mrs. Anderson stated that the city is expecting 50,000-100,000 extra people in town. She would like to include an eye safety ad on the website, newspaper, and on Facebook for citizens. The committee discussed the possibility of providing inexpensive solar protection (glasses). Committee members mentioned that the school district will not have classes on the dates of each eclipse. They discussed how to keep the visitors in town to provide extra revenue, and possibly plan a festival or a concert at the Opera House.
