401 West Venice Avenue City of Venice Venice, FL 34285 www.venicegov.com Meeting Minutes Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Monday, May 19, 2014 3:00 PM Council Chambers I. Call To Order A city parks tour of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was held this date. The tour began at 3:00 p.m. II. Roll Call Present: 6- Chair Linda Kenfield, Joan Piper, Verna Silk, Vice Chair Charles Alfano, Jim Woods and Cindy Hicks Absent: 1- Steve Byington Also Present Vice Mayor Emilio Carlesimo, Public Works Director John Veneziano, Sarasota County Sports Director and Athletic Manager Pat Calhoon, and Recording Secretary Heather Taylor. III. City Parks Tour The parks tour included the following parks with comments as noted: Heritage Park, which Mr. Veneziano noted is identified in the transition plan as needing to be upgraded to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards; Graser Park; Chauncy Howard Park where discussion took place regarding sign visibility; and answered questions on restroom restoration at Higel Marine Park. The tour continued to Humphris Park; Venice Municipal Beach where discussion took place regarding funding for restroom restoration and lack of privacy in the women's restroom; fence replacement and play equipment at Hecksher Park; Centennial Park, Michael Biehl Park, Fountain Park, Ponce deLeon Park; noting the need for the fountain to be fixed; John Nolen Park, West Blalock Park and Arboretum, East Blalock Park, and Chuck Reiter Park. The board toured Service Club Park, Venice Fishing Pier where Ms. Piper pointed out a grassy area near the gazebo where the public has been walking; Maxine Barritt Park, Paw Park, Brohard Park, and noted the need for a beach access sign at South Brohard Park. The board discussed the need for a walking path and tree removal at Venezia Park ; new rest stop usage at Venetian Waterway Park (VWP); continued the tour to Marina Park and Boat Ramp Park; mentioned working with the schools to establish sun and rain coverage at Mundy Park; new equipment at East Gate Park; and provided positive input regarding the City of Venice Page 1 of 2 Parks and Recreation Advisory Meeting Minutes May 19, 2014 Board fields at Wellfield Park. The tour concluded with viewing of Sawgrass Park, Ruscelletto Park, Patriots Park, Dr. Fred Albee Park, and Prentiss French Park. At the end of the tour Mr. Carlesimo distributed a policy on open space, park guidelines, and an event calendar. 14-0708 Mr. Carlesimo discussion IV.
