CITY OF VERONA PUBLIC SAFETY AND WELFARE COMMITTEE JANUARY 26, 2015 VERONA CITY HALL MINUTES 1. Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Yurs at 6:17 p.m. 2. Roll Call: Members Present: Heather Reekie, Evan Touchett and Dale Yurs. Others Present: Bernie Coughlin, Police Chief; and Kami Scofield, City Clerk. 3. Approval of Minutes. Motion by Touchett, seconded by Reekie to approve the minutes from the November 24, 2014 meeting. Motion carried 3/0. 4. Discussion and possible action regarding private streets. Alderperson Yurs began the discussion with hopes that the City could disallow private streets through an ordinance but within that ordinance have a way to allow approval of certain private streets on a case by case basis. Chief Coughlin explained that our current ordinance addresses private streets but lacks a definition of private streets. If the intent is to modify our ordinance perhaps we modify this portion of the ordinances and clarify a minimum width in feet of these streets. Ald. Touchett presented his issues with private streets including: maintenance of these private streets such as snow removal and long term maintenance like deterioration and repairs. Ald. Yurs is concerned with public safety enforcement and public safety access on private streets. The Committee directs staff and legal counsel to create an ordinance defining private streets, prohibiting residential private streets due to the issues stated above, and should include a provision stating that under certain circumstances exceptions to the ordinance may be granted through the approval of the Common Council. 5.
