City of Verona Senior Services Commission Meeting Minutes Sept. 9, 2014 Call to Order: Meeting called to order by Brad Stiner 6:03 PM. Present: Stiner, Diaz, Hagen, Hanson. Excused: McGilvray Minutes: Motion to approve Aug. 2014 minutes made by Stiner, approved by Diaz. Director’s Report (Hanson): Jennifer Miller accepted the Program Manager position and starts on Monday, Sept. 15. Our preliminary budget needs for 2015 were submitted to the city on August 29 th. The request for the Epic Grant for a T-Coil Hearing Loop System has been submitted. Our nurse saved the life of a man who became ill while he was here playing cards. He wanted to go home, but Barb insisted that we call the EMT’s. He was transported to the hospital and held overnight for observation. He had a heart attack during the night that would have killed him had he been at home. He and his wife have expressed their gratitude to Barb. An ongoing issue with humidity in the building will require installation of a whole building dehumidifier on the rooftop at a cost of about $53,000. We have asked for this as a Capitol expense in the 2015 budget. Other repairs necessary are the replacement of cracked sidewalks, which present a fall risk, and sealing of the parking lot, which is beginning to deteriorate. Training/outreach: July: TRIAD, I Team, Outreach meetings: Atty. Hanson; local boy scout troop assisting a senior client with their move; client & a carpenter to get the client’s kitchen/ceiling fixed to safety standards; local pharmacy on new medication dispenser system, outreach with new local home health provider. August: TRIAD; Verona Police, Dane Co. Sheriff, & a client’s family about a client at risk; Four Winds Manor staff & HCPOA. Additional projects: Hosted the Milwaukee Brewer Baseball outing in July Assisted in the interview process & selection of the new Program Manager in August. Program Report: We started a new collaboration with the Verona Public Library called “Lunch at the Library” which allowed our meal participants the chance to see the 9/11 exhibit on Sept. 8. The lunches will continue as a regular monthly event so that participants can see library exhibits and have better access to library services. We added an art class series in September, which was videotaped and posted on the Verona City Cable channel. A link to YouTube was added on the VAAA website. A Health Fair and Flu Shot Clinic is planned for Oct. 8. About 24 vendors are invited. The July birthday party entertainment was the Foley’s Cajun Band. August’s birthday party featured Dean’s Blue Country. The Chuck Wagon BBQ occurred the same day. Monday afternoon performances of the Paoli St. Pickers continues to draw 100 or more independent seniors weekly, as well as residents from Four Winds Assisted Living, and members of a group home from Iowa County. Financial Update As of July 30, 2014, we are 243 days, or 67% through this year’s budget. To date, we have spent 51% of our annual budget. Some of the cost savings were due to short staffing. We are over budget in maintenance due to several delayed maintenance issues, which we are addressing, but under budget overall.
