Verona Senior Citizens Commission September 13, 2016 Minutes The meeting was called to order at 6:03 PM. Present: Stiner, Diaz, McGilvray, Eifert, Hanson. Motion by Diaz, seconded by McGilvray, to approve the August 2016 minutes. Approved, 3-0. Director’s Report The City Council approved the $2200 cost of completing a heat load calculation study. Doug Presny, Alliant Energy’s engineering consultant, will review the study. We will get three quotes before going ahead with the repair. Transportation Update: 34 people attended the trip to the EAA Museum in Oshkosh Sept. 8. A request to increase transportation funding for Verona seniors from $4000 to $6000 in the 2017 budget is included in the 2017 budget request. EPIC grant updates: (2013) The new outdoor furniture has arrived. (2016) We expect to find out in October if our 2016 request for $14,900 for updates to the AV system, plus a 55” smart TV for the Fireside Room will be approved. The 2017 operating budget has been submitted. Meetings with the Finance Director, City Administrator, and Finance Committee to review the budget will occur in the next few weeks. CVMIC, our insurance provider, completed a tour of our building, and recommended cleaning our storage areas. This was completed, and has been re-inspected and approved. CVMIC completed ergonomic assessments on staff work stations and has recommended new desk chairs and other small changes which we will follow through on yet this year. Quilts of Valor will award 20 quilts to Verona veterans on November 10th at 3 PM. This will be a moving ceremony and we encourage your attendance. We are meeting with PLATO to discuss the possibility of getting some PLATO classes taught here at the Senior Center. PLATO is an affiliate of the UW Division of Continuing Studies. Dementia Friendly Community Report A short presentation on the DFC will be given at the Verona Chamber’s Sept.14 lunch & learn. A support group for adult children and working caregivers will start on Sept. 15. It will be led by our former intern, Kim Crowell, who is a UW Social Work student. This support group is affiliated with Dane County Aging & Disability Resource Center. BMO bank has completed Dementia Friendly training and two more banks have agreed to be trained. Case Management Report August 2016 Office/home visits: 39 Home delivered meals: 452 Congregate meal total: 204 Groups: Caregivers support group, Parkinson’s support group, and Veterans group (Vet’s trip to the moving Vietnam Wall in Madison) Training or outreach meetings: TRIAD meeting, TRIAD presentation on “Home Safety” with speakers from the Dane County Sheriff’s Dept. Outreach at local senior housing buildings – Sugar Creek, Prairie Oaks II & Evia, Park Verona. Outreach at Shettler Terrace included a fire safety presentation given by members of the Verona Fire Dept. Collaborated with Four Winds on a Health Care Power of Attorney clinic. Received a referral of a new client from Verona Police Department. Program Report August 2016 August Outreach: Lunch in the Community- Sugar River Pizza; Senior Planners meeting; Quilts of Valor; Home Instead; Elder Tree, Scott Gartzke Participation by Gender: Female 70%, Male 30% Participation by Location: City of Verona: 69% Out of Town: 31% Participation by Age: Under 60: 2% Ages 60-64: 6% Ages 65-69: 16% Ages 70-74: 18% Ages 75-79: 17% Ages 80-84: 15% Ages 85 +: 26% Average Daily Users: 64 August Event Sign-ins: 1495 Total Seniors Served: 344 Volunteers Hours Recorded: 475 Special August Programs: Birthday/Anniversary Party with Larry Bird; presentations on Yogi Berra (Barry Abrams of Abrams Senior Theater), Elder Tree, a social website designed for seniors, and on bone health; Pontoon Boat Ride; MATC Apple Devices class, Ice Cream Socials. Financial Update As of September 13, 2016, we are 70% through the year, and have spent 59% of our budget. VAAA Report by VAAA President, Louis Eifert Pie Social will be Oct. 26. Board meetings have been changed to meet at 9:30 AM on Wednesdays instead of at 9 AM on Tuesdays.
