Vienna, Virginia, Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at 8 am. The following members were present: Mr. Baldwin, Mr. Layer, Ms. van Doorn, Members Absent: Ms. Hanley, Mr. Cheselka Staff present: Planner Sharmaine Abaied Town of Vienna Page 1 Printed on 5/23/2023 Board of Architectural Review Work Meeting Minutes April 26, 2023 Session BARWS23-06 120 Cherry St SE - Vienna Community Center Wall Mural - Work Session 6 Applicants: Deborah Kennedy – 203 Prescott Cir SE, Vienna VA – Chair, Vienna Public Arts Foundation. Ms. Kennedy stated that the Vienna Public Arts Foundation is to raise funds for Public Art in Vienna. She expressed the struggle it has been to raise funds. She noted that they needed to focus on different ways to raise money. She stated that with the Town’s support, they decided to create a New Day Mural that will be placed in the Community center. The New Day Mural is about the Town of Vienna getting through the Covid experience together. This will be a creative way to raise funds and allow the residents to feel good about Public Art. The process for the creation of the mural is as follows: • Digitize Artwork • Pixilate (7,000 pieces that will be going on 3,500 bricks) • Invite folks to donate to paint a brick Ms. Kennedy presented a PowerPoint presentation to the board containing information on the artwork, mural's location, material, maintenance, dimensions, brick count, and the artist’s information. The board reviewed the proposed Mural and made the following questions, comments & recommendations: • Is there a way to place lights into the eaves? • Why was there a shift from the initial artwork (sunburst) to the current artwork (sunrise)? • 374 Maple Ave W - Sunrise of Vienna is a good example of a Mural presentation. • Not advisable to move the lights. • What would the artwork look like if it was not stretched? • See potential for dimensionality between plants, landscaping & artwork. • The length of the eaves are not equal. If you stretch it to the width of the building, it will be accentuated. • Picture frame draws your eyes to a focus. It also resolves the problem of the lights by incorporating them into the architecture and landscaping. • up the price for the brick • The artist can use a shrubbery that complements the building and use the dimensionality of the earth to incorporate it with the design. • Provide the artist with the plants to see how they enhance them in the architecture. • Don’t remove the lights/ utilize them. • Don’t stretch the artwork over the entire building. • Having the artist present would be helpful. • Missing the signature of the artist on the artwork.
