Seasonal Contests for Standale DDA Businesses Adjournment Next Meeting Monday, October 10 at 5:30 PM in Commission Conference Room Page 1 of 6 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES COMMISSION CONFERENCE ROOM MONDAY, MAY 2, 2022 5:30 PM Call Meeting to Order - Record Attendance Committee members present: Jessica Babcock; Nicole DiDonato; Mary Kuk-Wieber; Nicholas Erickson; Erin Gregones; Genevieve McKeiver; Jena Wilmers; Carla Hendon; Leigh Ann Gray Members Absent: Elaina Huizenga Discussion Items Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes - Motion to approve: Carla Hendon Seconded: Jena Wilmers 2.Carla mentioned creating a yearly calendar of events to try to get ahead for planning purposes a.Erin will create; Jessica will provide previously created document. b.Potential to include event dates and contest results in newsletter 3.Mem Parade was discussed. a.Potential to hand out pamphlets / dog treats / candy. Tabled for next year. 4.Mayor Carey wants to bring attention to Remembrance Road businesses. a.Ideas to spotlight: Business passport; scavenger hunt or bingo with photos in each business to create larger picture; business blurbs in monthly newsletter. 5.Mention for August event of farmer’s market / flea market. a.Nicole to check permits and City as location. b.Leigh Ann will double-check conflict with any other potential markets happening. Community Engagement Committee Minutes 5-2-22 Page 1 2 of 2 6 6.Opportunity to help with businesses with their own events. a.Jessica will check with Humane Society. b.Carla offered to check with Blanford. 7.Potential for CEC to help with established backpack drive. 8.Sidewalk chalk art contest discussed; June or July potential? 9.Adopt a highway sections discussed. Dates to be collected for each of the 3 sections. Questions? Contact Nicole DiDonato, Communications Manager for the City of Walker, at ndidonato@walker.city or (616) 791-6893. CONTEST RULES: 1. Any business, individual, club or organization doing business in Walker/Standale may enter! However, the display has to be set up on Lake Michigan Drive light poles in Standale to be judged. Poles next to parking lot entrances may not be used. 2. Fill out the above entry form or go to the City of Walker's website at www.walkermi.gov to download an application. 3. Applications can be mailed to: City of Walker - Community Engagement Committee, 4243 Remembrance Rd. NW, Walker, MI 49534, or emailed to ndidonato@walker.city. 4. The City's Department of Public Works crews will deliver the straw to your business. We will contact you when delivery is expected. 5. Putting up and taking down the scarecrows will be the participant's responsibility. 6. Scarecrows can be anything "family-friendly!" 7. Judging is done via social media. Winners are based on the number of reactions each picture gets. Pictures of all the scarecrows will be displayed on the City's Facebook page @CityofWalkerMI at 5pm, October 18. Winners will be based on the amount of reactions under your scarecrow's picture from that week on the City's Facebook page. IMPORTANT DATES: October xx : Pictures of your scarecrow must be emailed to ndidonato@walker.city by this date. October xx: Scarecrows must be in place. Pictures will be up online & judging begins at 5pm. October xx: Judging ends at 5pm. October 24-28: Awards will be delivered. November 1-2: Scarecrows must come down. Page 6 of 6
