City Staff: Fire Chief Dave Pelton, Deputy Fire Chief Chad Host, City Manager Darrel Schmalzel and Assistant City Manager Frank Wash. Discussion Items Approval of Minutes from June 19, 2023 Motion by Thom Burke, seconded by Jessica Babcock to approve the June 19, 2023 meeting minutes. Motion Carried. Fire Department Personnel Discussion Fire Chief, Dave Pelton, gave an updated presentation to the committee regarding his request for two additional firefighters and one additional fire inspector. He stated the department is currently operating with 30 paid-on-call firefighters and six full-time firefighters. However, due to the lack of paid-on-call responses, high turnover and full-time burnout, Station #3 is critically low staffed. Chief Pelton also expressed his concerns regarding the lack of seasoned mentors due to life changes. There was discussion held. Thom Burke requested an increase in the frequency of updates and accuracy, suggesting quarterly updates in order to confirm the merit behind the new hires. Mayor Carey requested a Police-Fire Sub committee meeting be called for the third Monday in November in order to receive an update from the Fire Department. He stated there will not be impact metrics, but any updated data will be helpful. He also suggested to set the meeting with both police and fire departments present. Motion by Jessica Babcock, seconded by Thom Burke to approve hiring two additional firefighters and one additional fire inspector in the Fire Department. Motion Carried.
