Agenda

Traffic Committee Agenda DPW Conference Room 4243 Remembrance Rd. NW. Tuesday, November 12, 2024 2:00 PM Committee Members: Scott Conners, P.E., City Engineer / Travis Mabry, P.E., Assistant City Engineer / Gary Postema, DPW Director / Keith Mankel, Police Chief / Darrel Schmalzel, City Manager / Frank Wash, Assistant City Manager / Melanie Grooters, City Commissioner Agency Representatives: Jason Cole, P.E., MDOT / Matt Van Dyke, Grand Rapids Traffic Safety Discussion Items 1. Lake Michigan / Maynard Traffic Signal: MDOT recently received a concern about Lake Michigan traffic running the red light at the Lake Michigan and Maynard traffic signal. Discussion will occur regarding MDOT and Police Department observations and potential actions to discourage this from occurring. 2. Lake Michigan / Ferndale Traffic Signal: Deanna Turashoff, 1754 Overfield (Kentwood) and a Grand Valley State University student, is concerned about pedestrian safety at the Lake Michigan and Ferndale traffic signal. When crossing from south to north on the west side of the intersection, Ms. Turashoff has experienced four near misses with vehicles turning from northbound to westbound. 3. 3 Mile / Walker Traffic Signal: Lynda Allyn, address withheld, is concerned about eastbound and westbound traffic on 3 Mile running red lights at the 3 Mile and Walker traffic signal. Ms. Allyn has recently observed a few near misses at this intersection. She believes that the cause of the red light running may be the sun blinding drivers during sunrise and sunset. Ms. Allyn has requested that the Traffic Committee consider adding traffic signal heads on the vertical mast arm poles to improve signal visibility. 4. Bristol Stop Signs: Gary Mulder, 752 Bristol, has requested that the stop signs for northbound and southbound Bristol be removed at both Pannell and Waldorf. He does not believe that the traffic volumes on Page 1 of 23 Pannell and Waldorf are high enough to warrant Bristol traffic stopping. 5. Eagle / Pohens Stop Sign: The DPW Sign Shop recently noticed that there is no stop sign for Eagle at Pohens. Similar intersections in the neighborhood appear to have stop signs posted. 6. Maplerow Speeding: Andrea Johnson, 1406 Maplerow, is concerned about speeding on Maplerow, between Leonard and Remembrance. She has requested 15 mph speed limit signs, traffic calming speed humps, and “No Cut-through” signs. 7. Informational Items: M-11 Memorial Highway Name: The Michigan Legislature recently passed a law providing a Memorial Highway name to M- 11, from 3 Mile to the Grand River. M-11 will still be referred to locally as Remembrance Road and Wilson Avenue. However, it will also have a Memorial Highway name of “Korean War Veterans Memorial Drive.” MDOT will be installing two brown signs with the Memorial Highway name on them. A sign for eastbound traffic will be located on M-11 near 3 Mile and a sign for northbound traffic will be located on M-11 near the Grand River. 8. Supporting Documents 9.
