Council Chairman Phil Mendelson announces a public hearing before the Committee of the
Whole on Bill 24-1064, the “Marion Barry Avenue Designation Act of 2022.” The hearing will be
held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 via Zoom Video Conference.
Bill 24-1064 was introduced on October 24, 2022 by Councilmember Trayon White, Sr. and
nine other Councilmembers. The stated purpose of Bill 24-1064 is to officially designate the entirety
of Good Hope Road S.E. (within Squares 5769, 5768, 5767, 5766, 5765, 5764, 5763, 5619S, 5718S,
5612, 5611, 5606, 5627, 5763, 5630, 5635, 5631, 5734, and 5633) in Ward 7 and Ward 8 as Marion
Barry Avenue, S.E. An “official name” refers to the legal designation of a street for mailing address
and other purposes, whereas a symbolic name for a street or alley shall be in addition to and subordinate
to any name that is an official name. If adopted, the effect of this legislation would be to officially
rename the entirety of Good Hope Road as Marion Barry Avenue, changing all of the mailing addresses
from Anacostia Park to Alabama Avenue, S.E.
