ARTS COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES
MEETING DATE: Tuesday April 9, 2019

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
A motion was made by Ms. Mann, seconded by Mr. Ahearn, to approve the minutes of
March 5, 2019, as corrected.
AYES: AHEARN, BAKKER, BRADLEY, CAHOON, CORELLI, DRISSELL, MANN,
MURPHY, SHAPIRO
NOES: NONE
The March 5, 2019 minutes were approved as corrected.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT
The Nominating Committee will report at the May meeting.
POETRY WEEK
The Commission discussed upcoming Poetry Week events and reaching out to various
schools.
SUMMER CONCERT SERIES
A concert will take place at the Masonic Temple on August 24. Mayor Welch and Mr.
Murphy are meeting with Mike Silverman to discuss additional dates.
BARBRE PARK EVENT
The sculpture dedication will take place on June 1 at 2 p.m. The sculpture is coming in a
week or two earlier. The Commission will be in charge of the food for the event.
BANNER UPDATE
Mr. Ahearn is reviewing the proof then they will be ordered.
PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
Ms. Conrad is helping with the application. In addition to the Library, we are working
with the Historic Preservation Commission and there is a historic building theme. The
plan is for the submissions to be juried in June and displayed in July.
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN THE ARTS
The Commission discussed possible nominees.
A motion was made by Ms. Bradley and seconded by Mr. Murphy to nominate Mary
Engelbreit.

MURPHY, SHAPIRO

Ms. Engelbreit will be contacted to let her know of her nomination and check on
possible reception dates.
MISCELLANEOUS UPDATES
The bench commissioned for Ms. Bradley has been completed. The Commission
discussed a possible site for the bench.
Ms. Bradley stated that the Chamber of Commerce is investigating a mural on the
McCaughen Burr building. The Commission discussed whether a piece of public art on
a private building would come before the Commission.
Paint Webster is May 11. The reception is at the Webster Arts gallery at 5:30 p.m.
The Webster Art Fair is June 7, 8, and 9. Volunteers are needed.
Ms. Mann stated that we need to think about finishing the Sculpture Garden.
The next meeting of the Commission will be Tuesday, May 7 at 7:30 a.m. in the Second
Floor Conference Room
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting was
adjourned at 8:40 a.m.
