CITY OF WESTMINSTER TREE COMMISSION MEETING SUMMARY February 10, 2015 56 West Main Street, 4:30 PM 1. Attendance Commissioners - Chair Steve Allgeier, Commissioners Cindy May and Howard Wilt Staff –Marge Wolf, and Andrew Gray Attendees - Jessica Fitzgerald and Christian Fitzpatrick 2. Approval of Minutes a. Commissioner May made a motion to approve the November 11, 2015 meeting minutes. Chair Allgeier Seconded. The motion passed. 3. Old Business a. Treating identified Ash Trees in Westminster – Mr. Gray noted, Colleen Kenny, Maryland State Forester, identified Ash trees along Main Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and several of the City Parks. The City was supplied with treatment and removal recommendations. b. Replanting empty tree pits along Main Street –Mr. Schlitzer provided the Commission with tree pit planning suggestions. The Commission decided that an Elm Tree would be suitable to be planted at the empty tree pit located at 283 East Main Street. 4. New Business a. Main Street tree inventory – Mr. Gray discussed the City’s GIS tree inventory map and findings from the Main Street tree inventory. Members present were able to see the location, number and type of trees located along Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. b. Tree City USA application (update) – Mr. Gray informed the Commission that Adopted September 14, 2016 the Tree City USA application was submitted to the Arbor Day USA Foundation. The City is waiting to receive confirmation on recertification. c. Arbor Day tree planning locations (Main Street or School) – The Commission decided this year’s Arbor Day tree planting should occur in Downtown Westminster along Main Street. The Commission will leave the decision up to City Staff as to where the exact location will be. d. Empty tree pit planting suggestions – Discussed during old business item b. 5. Commissioner Reports a. Chair Allgeier informed the Commission that McDaniel College is in the process of becoming a Tree Campus USA. 6. Staff Reports a. Ms. Wolf asked the Commission if they would start to brainstorm ideas for this year’s Tree Workshop. Jim Urban might be a possible speaker. 7. Adjournment Commissioner May made a motion to adjourn. Chair Allgeier seconded. The motion passed. Adopted September 14, 2016
