Discussion and action on operation of the Aquatic Center, 5815 Alta Verde St., Weston, due to water leak beneath the pool Osterbrink presented background information of a water leak beneath the pool. Osterbrink stated staff started filling the pool Monday, May 23rd and finished Wednesday, May 25th. When starting up the play structure and water slides, staff noticed the play structure was not operating correctly and saw sand and rock pushing up threw the floor geysers. Osterbrink was able to isolate the leak to the floor geysers. Fischer Brother’s, who refurbished the play structure, came Friday, and inspected the structure. Fischer Brother’s realized that a pipe feeding part of the play structure is broken under the surface. They were able to isolate the water supply to the broken pipe. Staff started monitoring water loss Friday and over the holiday weekend because the pool level was still low after isolating the two leaking pipes. The Service Manager visited the site on Tuesday and recommended contacting a scuba diving company to check the hydrostatic relief valves. Dive Point Scuba is scheduled to check the valves. Donner informed the committees on the estimated additional expense of operating the pool if deciding to keep the pool in operation. Donner stated an estimated 2.1 million gallons of water will be used over 90 days for a cost of $4,000 and $400 for treating that water. The Committees expressed their concerns of the possible leak creating a void under the pool surface and the pool collapsing, treated water going into the ground with the close location of the creek, and the cost of additional expense of water and chemicals. Osterbrink addressed their concerns. Osterbrink stated the Service Manager from Newman Pools has no safety concerns with keeping the pool in operation. With a loss of 16 gallons per minute, his perspective is the leak is within a small diameter pipe like the pool inlets or the hydrostatic valve. Also, in all his years in the business he has not seen or known of any pools collapsing because of leaks beneath the pool surface. Osterbrink mentioned that the treated pool water has more chlorine than tap water, but we use the same chemicals to treat pool water as tap water. Based on the calculated loss of 22,000 gallons a day the estimated cost is $4,500 for 90 days, the duration of the pool season. The Committees advised Osterbrink to continue tracking the daily water loss, contact a leak detection company and to purchase a hydrostatic valve if that is what the scuba diver determines is the issue.
