WHITEFISH ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE MINUTES
December 1, 2020
The meeting was called to order by Kathy Skemp at 8:15AM
PRESENT: Stacy Caldwell, Shane Jacobs, Diane Kane, Leslie Lowe, Kathy Skemp
ABSENT: Paul McElroy, Tracy Rossi
STAFF: Wendy Compton-Ring
PUBLIC COMMENT: none
MINUTES: The minutes from November 3, 2020 were unanimously approved.
OLD BUSINESS
Façade Change, 1000 Wisconsin Avenue, Solus Architects (ARC 20-29) Applicant
described changes to the landscaping (around the site and adjacent to the building);
changes to the building materials that better complement The Quarry project; changes to
the overhangs and they received an approval from The Quarry on their project/materials.
Diane – the addition of landscaping is an improvement
Leslie – Colorado Spruce in a 5-foot wide area is not going to work – they have a mature
spread of 15 to 20-feet; the plants selected are not the correct size; where is the trash
enclosure; where are the bike racks and pedestrian connections to the building; need to
be thinking about pedestrian/bike circulation
Applicant – could add a bike rack; still determining where the trash enclosure will be
located
Stacy – huge improvement; worth thinking through the ped-bike circulation/access; likely using
the driveways
Leslie – it is a huge improvement
Shane – screen wall on the roof may not be enough; any changes will need to brought back to
the Committee; there might be a better way to connect it to the design of the building so it doesn't
look like a hat on the roof
Kathy – an improvement over the previous version
Motion:
Stacy – move to approve as submitted with properly sized trees in the landscaping areas,
an analysis of how pedestrian and bikes will flow through the site, and the trash enclosure
Diane – 2nd
Discussion: none
Vote: motion passes unanimously
1
Starbucks, Railing on top of Retaining Wall, 6405 Highway 93 S, MT Creative (ARC 20-
06) Applicant described railing color and material. The applicant apologized for not
bringing the material before the Committee before its installation.
Kathy – thinks its fine; it is simple; one can see through it without focusing on the railing
Diane – asked if it meets code with the wide spaces in its design and installation
Motion:
Leslie – move to approve subject to confirmation that it meets Code
Diane – 2nd
Discussion: none
Vote: motion passes unanimously
NEW BUSINESS
New Coffee Building, 1000 Wisconsin Avenue, Solus Architects (ARC 20-30) The
applicant described the project, its location and proposed colors. The siding is the same
as the main building with the addition of white brick to protect the building and complement
the business's signage.
Leslie – is that a walk-up window on the south side? Yes
Kathy – will be the brick be a veneer or a full brick. Normal-sized full brick. Asked about
maintenance of the brick
Leslie – any concerns with the overhang being bumped by large vehicles? No
Shane – what is the metal roof profile? Standing seem with a stitch – no delta rib;
suggested the materials wrap the corner; opportunity to look at the two halves versus
materials being applied on each face
Motion:
Leslie – move to approve subject to changes to the materials as suggested by Shane,
updated bike/pedestrian connect between the walk-up coffee building and the Wisconsin
Avenue bike path and ped/bike furniture in the landscaping (bike rack, seating, picnic
table)
Diane – 2nd
Discussion:
Leslie – the pedestrian access to the building could simply be a material change in the
asphalt
Vote: motion passes unanimously
