Bicycle Stuff
We started the meeting with the coordinator from Carmel’s Alternative Transportation Group, David
Littlejohn. This is a paid position that has been in existence since 2006.
Apparently, Carmel has increased their pathway mileage from 15 miles in 2003 to about 130 miles
today. We’re talking essentially pathways useable by bicycles. David mentioned that setting up
numerous locations for bike parking was helpful in encouraging this form of transportation.
David noted that Carmel has been certified as a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of
American Bicyclists. He also noted Carmel has been able to obtain summer interns from Ball State to
work in his group.
David noted 106th Street was becoming one of their main East-West pathways.
Potential action items:
1. Pursue certification?
2. Pursue interns?
3. Pursue links with 106th Street?
Other Stuff
Phil Howard noted that Parks is pursuing the purchase of land just south of the “driveway guy” as a
potential work-around for the Rail Trail at that point.
We’re looking into organizing a bike ride along the Farm Heritage Trail from Lebanon to Thorntown
(about 8 miles) on Saturday morning, September 15th…and, possibly going another 5 miles up to
Colfax. We can work on details/logistics at our next Pathways meeting on September 10th.
Richard, is there a good meeting place in NE Lebanon to hop onto the FHT? And, are small motorized
scooters allowed on that trail??
Next meeting: Town Hall, September 10th. 6pm
