Minutes of Meeting - October 13, 2014
Attendance at Meeting:
Art Small
Bill Spitz
Jeff Edmunson
Lisa Burr
1. Jeff lead discussion on Safe Routes--Need for more public education related to vehicles
stopping at crosswalks and slowing down in school areas per Lisa. Need for crossing guards and
police at times that students are biking and walking to school. Jeff will follow up with Martha-
School Coordinator to see if we can help in anyway to expand the bike and walk to school
programs and safety related to these programs. Lisa felt that we needed to provided more
encouragement and education to parents and students to get more students to bike and walk to
school instead of having the parents drive their children to school or in the case of high school
students driving themselves to school.
2. Art and Bill provided updates related to Walk and Bike Friendly Applications. We have
already presented in our applications which reflects Zionsville as it currently exists. It seems that
the reviewers of our applications are looking for more regulation and commitment by the Town
related to walking and biking. The questions is what does the Town need to do to go forward
with these applications? The Town appears to have the necessary infrastructure. But, are we
going to adopt some form of Complete Streets, are we going to work towards more safety and
enforcement as it relates to walking and biking, are we going to make any type of financial
commitment towards walking and biking, are we going to outline future plans related to walking
and biking? Discussion was had on each of these topics.
3. The question was raised about whether the Pathways Committee needs a Master Plan like the
Parks Department?
4. It was discussed whether the Committee needs a better Coordinated effort between the
Committee and the Town's various Departments and Committees.
5. It was also noted that attendance at the Committee meeting was down. Accordingly, Lisa
raised the question of whether it would be better to hold the meeting at 8:00 AM on the second
Monday of each month? Will discuss at next meeting.
