Christian Parra, 28 South Bay Avenue, asked the Board to consider changing the Village Code concerning fowl to be more amenable to keeping chickens on residential properties. He submitted a letter previously to the Board and at the meeting presented a petition signed by 55 neighbors in favor of repealing Amityville Code §39- 11, restricting the keeping of any fowl in structures within 200 feet of neighbors’ dwellings and living quarters. The Board noted that a few properties in the Village would be eligible under the current code. Mayor Siry and several Trustees advised there are issues with keeping chickens, including health reasons, rodents, flammability of coops, odors, and an overall nuisance factor that is unfair to neighbors. Deputy Mayor Kevin Smith explained that properties were larger years ago and today, neighbors are closer. Trustee O’Neill pointed out that even under the Town of Babylon Code, Mr. Parra’s property would not comply. Mayor Siry said the Board would check with NYCOM and SCVOA to compare other local codes.
