Community Tree Council (CTC) Meeting Minutes
Meeting Date: February 11, 2019
Location: Planning Department
In Attendance -
Members: Nina Wurzburger, Shawn Doonan, Pam Knox,
Rodney Walters, Joe Perloff, Phil Hale, Myung Cogan
Staff, Guests, and Marc Beechuk, Mary Attaway, Joseph Bates
Ex-Officio Members:
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Nina Wurzburger and began at 4:00 P.M. A
quorum was present. The recent interviewees, Mary Attaway and Joseph Bates were introduced to
the CTC.
Housekeeping (Secretary) Rodney Walters 4:05- 4:25 PM
● Roll Call Sign In:
● Membership Roster Updates: The reappointment request of all current CTC members will be put on the
February agenda setting session for the March Mayor and Commission meeting.
- Motion made, seconded and approved for the acceptance of Mary Attaway and Joseph Bates as
nominees by the CTC to be submitted to the Mayor and Commission in February 2019 for
appointment to the CTC as voting
- Motion made, seconded, and approve to accept the utility foresters responsible for maintenance in
Athens Clarke County as non-voting ex-officio members to of the CTC. Sherri Lizott has
expressed interest in attending CTC meetings. She is the current Georgia Power NE Georgia Power
regional utility forester responsible for the power line maintenance in Athens Clarke County.
● CTC Annual Report: The Annual CTC report was submitted to the Mayor and Commission on 1/22/2019.
● Appointment of Commissioner Liaison – Mayor Girtz has appointed Commissioner Russell Edwards as the
Mayor and Commission liaison to the CTC.
● New Members, Binders & Applications - Have prepared materials for new member binders (will send
electronic copies to all members)
● Required Business - communication and interface with commissioner’s office
- Annual report along with a treasurer’s report were submitted and received by mayor’s office. The
Mayor has also signed the ACC Arbor Day Proclamation.
- Approval for current CTC members & nominees to be assigned positions to the CTC is being put on
February agenda for the March Mayor and Commissioner meeting.
- Purpose and expectations for an ACC advisory committee needs to be communicated to CTC
members (tabled until March).
- Due to open information requirements, CTC needs to be put onto the ACC Boards and Authorities
website (agenda and minutes must be posted along with time and location of meetings and an invite
for public to attend given). – Roberts Rules of Order apply to this process. (Discussions are to be
recorded and dissenting opinions must be allotted for and recorded in minutes) (tabled until
March).
- CTC will need to advertise to fill remaining vacant seats (nominees should be selected by August)
(must select a nominees who represent a diverse range of interests – Diverse representation of ACC
citizenry) (tabled until March).
● CTC website(Run Ruffian = $90 per hour)–Website needs maintenance and management(tabled, March)
● Communicate ACC Forester time allotment to CTC = 75 hours annually

Treasurers Report: Pam Knox provided updates on the account balances for the CTC & Trees for
Tomorrow. Pam stated she would send digital copies of the CTC treasurer reports to
Rodney so they may be archived in the Community Tree Council computer files.
Old Business: Nina Wurzburger 4:25– 5:00 PM
Rock Springs (Replacement Tree Planting as part of MLK Day Celebration, Jan. 21st went well and was a
complete success (nice job for everyone who helped make the tree planting event come to fruition).
Piedmont College Art Park (Triangle between N. Harris St., Cobb St, and Prince Ave) Art Park project
- Has the artist been engaged to determine a price the sculpture that had originally been made
for the dog park. Art Park project will likely purchase the sculpture for the park.

TfT tree plantings (Tabled until March Meeting)
Broad Acres: (Planning for 2019 Arbor Day Event – February 15)
- Event Schedule
- CTC members to begin around 8:00 AM
- 11 UGA Landscape Design Master students to arrive around 8:30 AM
- Arbor Day ceremony to occur at 3:00PM
- Mayor Pro Tem or Commissioner Gary Russel to Read Arbor Day Proclamation
- Media coverage will need to be arranged
- Myunj and Nina will prepare media release and call media (Athens Banner & Flagpole)
- Marc will contact Jeff Montgomery - ACC Public Information Officer
Message: Arbor Day Tree Planting Event – From a grant (UPS & Lowes)
Collaboration between:
- Community Tree Council
- Athens Housing Authority
- Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful
- UGA
- ACC Landscape Management
- Materials (Stakes, wire, & rope- Shawn & Phil)
- Tools (15 shovels, 8 wheel barrows, 8 rakes & forks, gloves, 1st aid kit, wire cutters, knives)
Green Fest (Green Life Expo) – Library, Feb. 23rd
- Marc has offered to man a table at the event
- Flyers
- Will give out trees (saplings from Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful)
- Friends of Trees Award (table for now)
Next CTC Meeting: (Motion made, seconded and approved to move meeting time to March 18, 2019)
The meeting adjourned at 5:50 PM.
The 2/11/2019 CTC Minutes were submitted by Rodney Walters (Secretary) to CTC members by
email for review and edits. A motion was made on 2/11/2019 at the CTC monthly meeting to pass the
minutes. The 3/18/2019 CTC minutes were approved (after corrections were made) by unanimous vote.

- Idylwood & Friends Garden Club (donation for nuttal oak at Dog park) – wants a
follow-up as when planning for dog park have occurred.
- Trees for Tomorrow, Memorial Grove Tree Planting request – Sandy Creek Park
3/15/209 (details to be discussed at March meeting)
- Lissa Myers – 2 white oak (memory of Sean – Brother and Son)
- Mother plans to be present at time of planting to put some soil from native town in with
the roots
- Meridith McCoy Trees for Tomorrow – 1 red oak (commemoration of grandmother’s
birthday)
- Firefly Trail Tree Planting Commitment - Committed to Planting 40 trees for the Carl Jordan
Grove on the firefly trail. [will plant 5 ( eastern red cedars) trees as a 1st step to honor
commitment to plant 40 trees] - Trees are ordered (Scheduled for delivery on 2/18/19). Jacks
Creek Farm will need a check for $900.00 (from TfT) - $150 for delivery & $150 per tree.
● Ask for CTC approval for GA Power regional forester to attend CTC as an ex-officio member
