Monday, May 13, 2024 Meeting Minutes NORTHCENTRAL NEIGHBORHOOD PLANNING COUNCIL #2 Washington Heights – Hub of Hope, 153 N. Wood St. DRAFT 1. Call to Order & Welcome: 6:04pm. Larz calls to order. Introduction and to say something. 2. O’Bryant: this week is the prayer breakfast at Kellogg Ms. Bourgeois: Chapel Hill has seats open. (Please submit all correspondence/announcements in writing whenever possible) 6. Committee & City Staff Reports: a. Police Department/Fire Department: • Cpl. Gentry gives report 4/1-4/30; Foot patrols 19. Same as last month. Part one crimes. No robbery or B & E! That is good. No drug crime or weapons offense! Total 4 of 9 events. • Cpl. O’Bryant. 129 Redner. Checked over weekend. No one called to report problems. • Larz: When do you report incident? Car ran through Romantics. Discussion. • Cpl. Gentry: Changed companies of DR. Commission approved new set up which is phenomenal. • Mary: 90 Goodale, looks like they are burning tires. They have a fire going in the back. Cpl. O’Bryant says to tell code compliance. They did a raid on that house. • Discussion on Claude Evans and patrols. Cpl. Wood St. b. Elected Officials: Rep Haadsma: It’s all about budget. Have full set of legislature. Were tied until April 2024. Now have full complement starting two weeks ago. Senate and house passed budget. Budget goes to conference. Anticipate pass Budget by July. So that there is reasonable planning by school districts. c. Neighborhood Services: Ms. Bourgeois: Ground breaking was phenomenal. d. Beautiful battle creek awards. Ms. Bourgeois: City did a great job with the Helen Montgomery monument. Discussion. e. Membership: None. f. Committees: nothing yet. g. Battle Creek Public Schools: None present. 7. Presentation: 8. Old Business: 9. New Business. Lynn ward Gray: New business/ announcement. Junteenth. Committee recognizes need for award. Give award to splash pad NPC2 and committee. It was utilized a lot during last year’s Junteenth. 10. Public Comments/Member Comments: Cpl. O’Bryant. Have been seeing issues with voter’s rights. In Georgia. Specifically, people of color in that area cannot vote for someone to represent them. Rep Haadsma: We are not seeing that in Michigan. That does not affect us here. Discussion. The Georgia issue came out of legislature. Governor just signed it without any explanation. Lynn: 1) city commission meeting tomorrow. 2) Summer Breeze. The Delta’s are starting a summer music festival. The coming Saturday. The 18th. From 4-9pm. At Festival Market Square. 3) Citizen oversight committee. Will be officially adopted. Looking for members of community. Applications similar to other. Training will be involved. This is a long time coming. NAACP has been working on this for a long time. Wood St. Ms Autumn Smith: Kennedy ‘24 campaign. Sign, shirt, hat, stickers. A petition going around. Axmytax.org. Looking at doing a constitutional amendment to do away with property taxes. 11. Next Meeting: Monday, June 10th, 2024 at 6:00 PM @ Washington Heights UMC. Juneteenth with be 14th at Washington heights Church. 15th will be at Claude Evans park. Vender applications due by June 7th. $50 for retail for food. Free for non profit. 12. Adjournment: Moved by Lynn. Second by Ron Sweet.. Motion Carried Unanimously. 5 votes for, 0 against.
