Fremont/Verona/McKinley Neighborhood Planning Council January 18, 2012 Meeting Minutes The January 18, 2012 NPC 4 meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. by Chairman Mark Jones. Dave Nielsen volunteered to take notes. Attendance: Members Attending: Marcia Austin, John Hennink, Mark Jones , David Nielsen Members Absent: Mary Conklin, Glenn Holmwall, Marcia Holmwall, Sherry Sofia, Laurie Sullivan Guests: Suzanne Nielsen, Szenoria Smith (membership submitted to city) Elected and City Officials: Dennis McKinley (Battle Creek Code Compliance) Minutes: We did not have quorum. Police Report: none present Program: SNAP: A Child’s Journey – Suzanne Nielsen • SNAP is an early childhood advocacy group. They have run a child pre‐school for 20+ years. • Reorganizing and creating a joint effort with First Congregational Church at the church’s facilities. They have permits from the state and city that let them have up to 65 kids. City of Battle Creek – Dennis McKinley They are beginning to develop code compliance procedures for commercial properties and business. Specific Properties: • 92 Groveland – currently boarded up. Is on the demolition list. • 11 Harvard – is on the demolition list. Needs federal approval because SHPO denied it based on “historical significance”. • 89 Frelinghuysen – not on the demolition list. Dennis will check on the property. • East Ave & Radley – house with stuffed animals as a tree decoration. Current opinion is that this is not a code violation. Was asked to reconsider. • 627 Capital Ave – Citation issued; court date pending. • Groveland Party Store – code violations issued, currently has a 60‐day compliance notice. • 411‐415 Capital Ave – Owner invited to NPC meeting & declined. Owner claims they do not have enough money to demo the buildings. Member concerns: • Discussion about appearance of new businesses and reused commercial buildings. City Commission – None Present The city commission was conducting a special meeting at the same time as this meeting, so no Commissioners were present. BBC Award – no new nominations. We still have a list submitted to the City. New Business Member status – roster needs revision.
