Council Minutes – June 11, 2012
Meeting at
Christ United Methodist Church

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM by Robert Whitfield, chair.
Attendance: Robert Whitfield, Chair; Dale Stratton; Nate Zanotti; Sara Schmanske; Joshua
Fausey; David Moore; Stan Beckwith; Barbara Beckwith; Mary Lou Ramon; Fred Bachman;
Mason Mayo; Officer Adam Pembrook; Carl Brockman; Deborah Gregory; Michelle Barlond
Smith; Anna Russell; Tony Russell; Dennis McKinley
Moment of Silence: A moment of silence was observed
Previous Minutes: The minutes from May 14, 2012 were approved by a voice vote.
Correspondence: Call Robert Whitfield if you have any questions on the Community
Leadership Project 20/20 ; Mr. Phillips from Neighborhood Inc has informed the chair that
there is no grant money for the Neighborhood Watch for NPC5 ; The Zoning board meeting
has been cancelled. The next scheduled meeting is 7/10/2012.
Police Report: Officer Adam Pembrook fielded questions.
Guest Speaker: Ann & Tony Russell as well as Michelle Barlond Smith discussed the
scientific research being done related to the oil spill affecting the Battle Creek Community.
They likened the lasting effects to the Gulf and Alaska oil spills in the past. Their purpose is to
raise awareness on the issue as well as organize and implement a study to determine what
affects if any have been experienced within our community related to the spill. Scientists from
the U of M and Pennsylvania are planned to visit in August to begin this process. There will
also be a program to appear on Access Vision over the next few weeks. Further info can be

Commissioner’s Report: Mary Lou Ramon informed the group that the city budget was
approved as well as reduced by not filling open positions rather than cutting existing staff.
School Report: Deborah Gregory discussed the fiscal year end, staff cuts and the Math and
Science Center ongoing construction project.
Code Report: Dennis McKinley distributed a written report and cited statistics on the highest
complaints for the area to be violations of the weed ordinance.
Membership: Excused absence Darlene Mayo
Beautiful Battle Creek Award: The award went to 116 Dunning as reported by Dale Stratton.
Old Business: None
New Business: The council decided to discuss the membership roster at the next meeting.
Nominating Committee: Nate Zanotti – No nominations at this time
Adjournment: Chair Whitfield adjourned the meeting at 8:13 PM
