Council Minutes – October 08, 2012
Meeting at Christ United Methodist Church
65 North Bedford Road
Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:01 PM by Robert Whitfield, chair.
Attendance: Robert Whitfield, Chair; Dale Stratton; Nate Zanotti; David Moore; Carl
Brockman; Fred Bachman; Rebecca Runyon; Mary Lou Ramon; Dennis McKinley; Deborah
L. Gregory; Mason Mayo; Susan Baldwin; Jim Baldwin; Joshua Fausey; Joe Britvec
A moment of silence was observed
Previous Minutes: September 2012 minutes were approved by voice vote.
Correspondence: NPC Symposium Leadership Workshops Phase III – The Peer to Peer
Networking is Tuesday November 20, 2012 at Burnham Brook. Any questions can be directed
to Theresa Durham at info@nonprofitalliance.org. Phase IV: Action Planning Support sessions
are being offered. Please schedule by November 21, 2012.
Police Report: None
Guest Speaker: In the absence of our scheduled speaker, Mayor Baldwin reviewed various
activities being held such as the following: Fall into the Arts 10/19/12 5 to 9 P.M.; Borgess
Groundbreaking 10/15/12 4:30 P.M.; KCC Historical Marker Presentation 10/14/12 at 3 P.M.;
Downtown ribbon cutting ceremony 11/15/12 at 4:00 P.M.
Commissioner’s Report: Mary Lou Ramon raised the issue of citizens being allowed to pay
the city worker when coming to disconnect their water. Pros and cons were discussed on this
issue. Landlord appeals were also a subject of discussion regarding the use of a certificate of
mailing or email instead of certified mail in this process. This would result in savings city
funding if implemented.
School Report: Deborah Gregory discussed the upcoming board meeting on October 15, 2012
as well as the silent march held on October 12, 2012.
Code Report: Dennis McKinley distributed a written report as well as fielded questions.
Weed / Long Grass season ends 10/31/2012.
Membership: Carl Brockman reported Stan & Barbara Beckwith as well as Darlene Mayo
have excused absences. In addition, Deb Owens requested and extended Leave of absence due
to conflicting meeting times with the International Festival of Lights Committee.
Beautiful Battle Creek Award: The award went to 20 Eldridge as reported by Dale Stratton.
Old Business: None
New Business: Nate Zanotti invited everyone to join in on the pancake dinner being held
11/2/2012. This event is held to generate funding for the lights in Urbandale during the holiday
season. The dinner is being held at the Christ United Methodist Church. The cost per person
is $6 and per family is $15.
Nominating Committee: Nate Zanotti – Nominations took place for the Chair, Vice Chair,
Secretary and Assistant secretary. They were approved by voice vote as follows: Chair:
Robert Whitfield; Vice Chair: Carl Brockman; Recording Secretary: Deborah Gregory;
Assistant Secretary: Rebecca Runyon
Guest Speakers are to be scheduled for the following meetings as assigned:

Adjournment: Chair Whitfield adjourned the meeting at 8:01 PM
