Urbandale Neighborhood Planning Council #5 Council Minutes - May 11,2016 Meeting at Christ United Methodist Church 1) Call to Order : Called to order at 7:00PM by Chairman Robert Whitfield 2) Attendance : Robert Whitfield, Deborah Owens, Fred Bachman, David Moore, Sara Schmanske, Hal Longman, Patricia Graw, Curtis Roberts, Cathrine LaValley, Paula Scarbrough, Terry Lancastyer, Brian Steele, Kathy Antaya Excused Absence; Joshua Fausey, Beverly Case, Freeman Thomas. Guests; Kaytee Faris Commissioner 4) Additions/deletions to the Agenda: None 5) Previous Minutes: Minutes from April meeting were approved by voice vote. 6) Police Report: Officer VanDyke gave a verbal report. Urbandale is a pretty calm area, generally slow crime month. 72 foot patrols, 50 traffic stops for speeding + accidents on W. Michigan. Distracted driving (especially texting) is #1 cause of accidents. 7) Guest Speakers: Continued discussion of the SWMCDC $1,000 grant. Pastor Steele suggested a monthly community hot meal program. Estimated 30% - 40% of residents live paycheck to paycheck. In the future develop weekly program, invite other non- profits to join plus offer other services, develop community center 8) Committee Reports 8a) School Report: Catherine LaValley reported. Tuesday May 31 will be a Townhall Meeting with Superintendant, City Manager & others to discuss a partnership between city and schools for use of school buildings. 8b)Code Report : Eric Morris - gave out new maps for NPC binder. increased code violations because most would qualify for free grant money to correct violation (forgivable if you live in house for 5 years. 8c) Beautiful Battle Creek Award : Sara Schmanske nominated Fire Station #5, 1170 W. Michigan Ave. Old Business: New Business: Commissioner Comments : Katee Faris (quest commissioner) and Commissioner Deborah Owens reported that the vacant & abandoned properties would include commercial properties and the city has adopted the International Property Maintenance Code.
