1. Call to Order: Meeting was called to order by Chairman Robert Whitfield at 7:03PM. Chairman
Whitfield called for a moment of silence.
2. Attendance: Robert Whitfield, Deborah Owens, Fred Bachman, Dennis MCKinley (staff), David
Moore, Sara Schmanske, Joshua Fausey, Hal Longman, Kathy Antaya, Ratricia Graw, Walt McIlroy, Cody,
Longon (Police), Catherine LaValley, Paula
Scarbrough, Terry Lancaster, Brian Steele, Mary Lou Ramon, Jenny Andersen, Donal Loomis,
Brenda Hunt. Excused Absences: Beverly Case, Curtis Roberts
3. Chair Notes/Announcements/Correspondence; None
4. Additions/deletions to the Agenda: Approved
5. Previous Minutes: Approved
6. Police Report: Officer Longon has just started his responsibilities in our area. Expects his assignment
to last six months. Reported that area was generally quiet. Answered questions from the membership.
Discussion on excessive speed on Morgan Ave. Re-installing speed bumps or installing stop signs were
discussed.
7. Guest Speakers: Brenda Hunt; CEO Battle Creek Community Foundation. Ms. Hunt spoke about the
Scholarships, Grants and workshops provided by the BCCF. They are always looking for volunteers.
Minutes of the meeting cannot do her presentation justice. Let it be said that her presentation was
extremely informative and needs to be heard by everyone in Battle Creek.
8. Committee Reports (Comments limited to 3 min per topic)
School Report: Catherine LaValley introduced Don Loomis; Principle at Springfield Middle School. He
spoke about a project that gets school leadership more involved in the community.
Code Report: Dennis McKinley gave a written and oral report
Beautiful Battle Creek; Sara Schmanske identified 275 N. Bedford Rd. as the recipient.
9. Old Business: Paula Scarbrough reported on the Urbandale Fall Festival. She handed out a flyer that
will be inserted in the Shopper News the last week of September. The flyer promotes all of the activities
that will be available for children as well as adults. Paula needs volunteers to help with games and other
activities.
10. New Business: Chairman Whitfield asked that each of the members volunteer to provide for a speaker.
The following assignments were made: Oct. - Hal Longman, Now. Deb Owens, Dec. Patricia Graw, Jan
2017. Kathy Antaya, Feb.
11. Commissioner Comments: none
12. Comments for the good of the Order
Public Comments: None
Member Comments: Hal Longman reported that he believed that it was inappropriate for Commissioner
Hembolt to interrupt the pledge at the City Commission meeting on September 6th to advise the audience
that in America you may disrespect the pledge by remaining seated and not reciting the words.
