Minutes of a Regular Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting August 7, 2018 A regular meeting of the Blue Springs Parks Commission was held on Tuesday, August 7th,2018 at the Fieldhouse. The Chairman called the meeting to order. Richard Mitchem – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Dennis Dovel George Deibert – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Matt Asikainen Kathy Richardson – Present Parks Dept. Staff: Jen Talaski Maureen Johnson – Present City Council Liaison: Ron Fowler - Present Brandon Jackley – Present Michelle Brown – Absent Megan Johnson – Absent A motion was made by Dena Duhon and seconded by Maureen Johnson to accept the Consent Agenda; it passed unanimously. Visitors/Correspondence: None Program/Activity Spotlight: Jen presented on new Fitness programs that have been implemented this summer and will continue throughout the Fall. Demonstration classes for three Group Fitness Classes, including, POUND, Restorative Yoga, and Strong by Zumba were held to gauge member’s interest. All three demonstration classes were highly attended, and we hope to add them to the Group Fitness Class Schedule this fall. In addition to group classes, Jen also discussed the MyZone system that the department is implementing. With this system, participants wear heart rate monitors during their workout and strive to achieve various levels of intensity, where they can earn different points based off their heart rate and intensity. There will be a demonstration class for this in November and we hope to implement this system in more of our classes. Finances: Finances were not available, but will be available at the next meeting. Staff Reports: Staff reviewed their reports. City Attorney – Jackie Sommer, City Attorney, presented on the Public Official Liability. During this training, Jackie covered the Sunshine Law and how this law comes into effect with the Parks Commission. Jackie provided reading material and handouts that outline her presentation and the Sunshine Law. Parks and Recreation Commission Chairman’s Report: None City Council Liaison Report: None Old Business: 1 Park Sales Tax Update: All projects, except the club house roof, are under contract. Thus far, the department is saving roughly $200,000 on current projects. The Park Sales Tax Sub Committee along with Parks and Recreation staff members met on July 17th to review updated designs submitted for the Old Mill playground and splash pad project. Two out of the five projects submissions were selected to have the community vote on. Videos of the designs will be available online and voting will be open for 5 days.
