Blue Springs Public Art Commission Minutes of the Meeting Thursday, January 14, 2016 Fieldhouse Conference Room 3:30 to 5:00 PM Attending: Kathe White, Barbara Landes, Greta Hoener, Carolyn Gordanier, Eleanor Frasier, Steve Willman. Guest: Stefan Hodes Call to Order. Eleanor called the meeting to order at 3:30pm Minutes. The minutes of the November meeting were approved with one correction…to remove the heading of “Agenda” from the first page. (note: there was no December meeting) Projects Information. “Firefighter Spirit”. 1. Steve reported that all contracts have been sent to artists and John Banks and Brandon Crandall have signed. The due date for signing is January 18 and he expects the other two to sign. After that, he will arrange for signatures from City. 2. Next steps are for video of installations during the last week of March, brochure created when there is more vegetation, and dedication. We discussed possible dedication at the CJCFPD building on Highway 40 as it has interior space for group attendance, and seating and screens to show photos of the artworks. We need to discuss this with Chief Westermann. Eleanor will contact John Banks to find out the dates he is available to be in Blue Springs and we think the others will be available as we schedule. “Remnants Restored” 1. Steve reported that the two artworks have been transferred to City and under City assets and insurance 2. Eleanor reported that she met Thursday morning with Downtown Alive Design Team to discuss an action plan for fundraising for the two sculptures. The Team will then present their ideas to the DA Board for approval so this is not official information a. The launch date for fundraising will be at the Picadilly Gala and will feature BS Art League as the chief donor of $1000. BSAL will have a table in front to honor them for their lead contribution b. At the Picadilly, we will have a flyer or brochure of some sort which will have info about the artwork, the artist statement, and a request for donation. c. There would be two plaques, one at each artwork which will differ only by identification of the artist who designed the sculpture. The donors would be shown as the same on both plaques and will have PAC logo and Downtown Alive logo at the top of the plaque. We will have artist signature and artist name and residence information on the plaques (note: question was it possible to have the state spelled out, such as Missouri rather than MO on the plaque?) d The plaques will denote the levels of giving: $1000, $500, $250, and $100, shown by larger fonts for increasing donation 1 5. Promotion materials will be sent by email and by mail, plus we expect to have information presentations at Chamber, Rotary, PTAs. Blue Springs Art League. (note: Eleanor will check if Cindy Miller can present at January BSAL meeting) 6. Public events will be used to present information. There will be a tent at Corks and Canvas (June 4th) with posters of art and flyers. We also will have information at wine booths . We hope to have flyers available at BSAL Fine Art Show in early March (note: Eleanor will check to see if this is acceptable) 7. We will have a Funding Committee to coordinate plans, compare donor contact lists, and arrange for Thank Yous to donors (such as coasters or mini aluminum bow ties or mini water tower pieces…to be decided if possible) 8. Dedication event is tentatively planned for Thursday, September 29, assuming artists are available and there are no other major events going on at that time 9. Total Budget for artists, promotional materials, plaques, dedication is $40,000 (more or less). $15,300 has been collected to date. “Breath” 1. Steve has a contract ready for Mid-Continent Library to sign and then we get City approval. Plaque has been designed with signature by Victoria Reed-Nieman (note: can we spell out state?) 2. Actual placement will require a meeting of library and PAC to find the spot to place the base before we can move the sculpture. We will probably wait until spring so we can see if the tree is dead and will be removed by Library. 3. No decision made on whether to have a dedication of this plaque (there are no donors as money was taken from Walmart funds) but library may want to do something. “OH!” 1. Steve said that plans are underway to remove “OH!” to have all paint removed and then powder coated with the original bright red color 2. We expect it to be placed on the area where “Evlove” was located with a new base placed in this area. A new plaque would be provided but we are awaiting signature from Dianne Mattern. Eleanor has contacted her but she has not responded. If she doesn’t send her signature, we will replicate the current plaque in the marble-like material. (note: there was an error in spelling, should read “Kyle and Ginny Gordanier. Also, can we make PAC logo larger and spell out state?) 3. NOTE: Ron and Carolyn Gordanier have volunteered to pay up to $1000 for restoration of “OH!” but they request that instead of powder painting, we research newer ways such as those described by artists Nathan Pierce and Scot Furgason, which involved using a special epoxy and clear coat finish for steel sculptures. THANK YOU to Ron and Carolyn for this generous donation. We will research and give an update on what is possible. “BlueSprings.Net” 1. Eleanor discussed that she had asked Meg Zahner (and husband Bill) if they make a presentation of their proposal to a group in May (PAC, City Council representative, Parks representative, City engineer and qualified artists) to find out what is actually needed and costs. 2 2. Steve said that if the amount of money exceeds a certain level, there must be three bids. (note: Eleanor reported (incorrectly) that the restoration was around $30,000….actually the Metalab bid was $13,800 and this is within the amount which requires three bids). We need to think of questions we wantto ask at the Megalabs presentation Updates and New Plans Plaques 1. “Mother and Child”—Eleanor called Eluisa Altman and she will send signature. Eleanor asked if there was a way to restore by painting or by cleaning product and Eluisa will direct this question to her firm. She asked that Steve send photos of the artwork so they can consider what might be done (note: it was decided that we want the artwork to be “Mother and Child” rather than “Mother & Child” and Eleanor will ask Kim to change) 2. “OH!” --awaiting signature from Dianne Mattern , need correction of donor name on plaque which will need to be re-designed to follow the format we are now using for plaques. 3. “Breath”—ready to create, based on whether to make state Wisconsin rather than WI 4. “Fire, Earth and Water”—Eleanor asked Janet Kummerlein to send her signature and then we will re-design the plaque and make it larger. Will use the thin Corian material in a neutral color 5. “Fortitude III”—Parks is in the process of creating appropriate frame for displaying plaque. Right now there is no signage and we would like to have it placed. 15 Years of Public Art publication—no information Public Art Programming with BSSD Students 1. We were pleased to learn that Stefan has completed his master’s degree and certification to teach and that he will continue to work with BSSD on a grant basis for this semester 2. Stefan reported that he views a good opportunity to work with all levels of BSSD students and that there were different venues to reach students to talk about public art 3. He has all the artworks on flash drive and can help with creating a digital artwork format or slide shows to use for high school TV station, Wildcat hour, etc. 4 He needs a parent sign off sheet for liability purposes and we will help with this concern Other 1. Eleanor asked that we move the PAC Bulletin Board from City Hall to Fieldhouse. Steve will ask if this is possible. 2. We discussed moving the PAC meetings from the 3rd Thursday of the month to the 2nd Thursday of the month, still at 3:30 to 5:00PM. --if approved, dates of meetings are: February 11, March 10, April 14, May 12, June 9, July 14, August 11, September 8, October 13, November 10, December 8. Look on your calendars and see if these dates would work for you in the future so you can respond when Eleanor sends out the poll. Tentative Next Meeting: Thursday, February 11 at Fieldhouse Conference Room, 3:30- 5:00PM 3 4
