Blue Springs Public Art Commission Minutes of the Meeting Thursday, March 9, 2017 Fieldhouse Conference Room 3:30 to 5:00PM Attending: Ramon Magee, Lawrence Randall, Greta Hoener, Barbara Landes, Kathe White, Eleanor Frasier, Kim Nakahodo, Steve Willman Call to Order. The meeting was called to order by Eleanor at 3:30. Acceptance of March minutes. The minutes were accepted with one spelling correction Updates/ Information a. “BlueSprings.Net”—we will plan to meet Meg Zahner at the sculpture to discuss any concerns we have and to hear the process they will follow in restoration of the artwork (Note: when we met, it was determined that there would need to be two colors of paint on the upright “rail”. We felt that the plan for restoration was satisfactory. It will commence depending on weather. b. Plaques—Eleanor reported that she had not heard back from the three artists (Nybeck, Lueza and Salitar) with their signatures. She will contact again. c. “Breath”—we saw the proposed plaque and recommended a change in the name of the donor from Wal- Mart to Walmart, since they have changed their brand name to the latter. Kim will correct and will send the pdf when we are ready to go forth. We need to select the color of the plaque material. d. Other Plaques—Eleanor asked if we wanted to consider a plaque for “Subdued Radiance” and “Quasarc” and we agreed to go ahead with this. She will contact Nicole Beck for her signature. ReDedication of “OH!” on Thursday, April 20 at 5:30pm…meet at the sculpture to admire. a. Invitation.The postcard front and back concept was reviewed and approved. Thanks, Kim. Kim reported that we could have the postcards printed, addressed and postage added by the printer. We liked this idea and will follow through. b. Mailing List: Eleanor said that she would provide the mailing list to Kim. We will not have a lot of addressees and there was only ten donors and many of those were from Blue Springs Art League. We will invite all Art League members to the event and other donors who have supported public art c. Refreshments. Barbara and Kathe are planning the refreshments which will all begin with the letter “o” (Example: olives). Refreshments will be served in the Journagan Family Room in the Howard Brown Building across the street from the art. d. Certificates. We decided that we would like to have certificates of appreciation to those who paid for the restoration. Eleanor will send information to Kim to prepare certificates for Ron and Carolyn Gordanier and the OPC company who did the powder coating. It was reported that this company went out of business but that a representative will be at the event to accept the certificate. 11th Temporary Public Art Exhibit a. Discussion was that we wanted to start the process of the Call to Artist for this exhibit earlier than before to allow for artists who want to do original work to have time to do so. In the past there was only about two months from the time of approval to the time of installation. If an artist cannot complete the work by the end of March, we cannot complete plans for the brochure or DVD. The “Firefighter Spirit” artist could not provide “Selfless” on time and it caused delay. We were unable to get information to students in May as previously planned. To avoid this, we need to place the Call sooner. b. Use of CAFÉ. Steve reported (and confirmed during the meeting) that the contract with CAFÉ needs to be reinstated. This means we have to have a new contract (takes time to get City approval). Also, we 1  determined that in order to complete the CAFÉ contract, we need the theme of the exhibition and some other pertinent facts regarding the artists and selection committee. c. Eleanor asked Greta and Larry to be in charge of suggesting the theme and possible sites for placement of four sculptures along Adams Dairy Parkway. Discussion was that we wanted to continue with the idea of whimsical art and that we preferred the west side of the parkway. We will decide the theme at the next meeting. Eleanor suggested everyone look at the parkway and come with ideas of where to place sculpture. Public Art in the Public Schools a. Greta reported that she had contacted art teachers and with the end of school it was going to be difficult to get something done this year but that the teachers were very interested in how we could incorporate interest in public art, such as dressing up the face in “Moving the Stars” with different outfits and to encourage photo shoots. This seems particularly of interest during prom times. Eleanor said that there was a need to clean and polish the artwork and asked Larry to take a look to see if we could do some immediate maintenance by Commission members. b. Greta is updating the “Treasure Quest” flyer and we will want this reviewed and approved so that we can have it to the BSSD students by May c. Greta reported she had not yet reached Stefan Hodes to gain his ideas about public art in the public schools that he did last year when he was a student teacher. She will continue to try to reach him Maintenance of Public Art Documents. a. Filing materials have been purchased and this project will be started in May or June. Grants a. Eleanor has not yet written the letter to request funding from Truman Heartland Community Foundation but plans to do so in March b. Eleanor asked Kim to check into the cost of publication of “Public Art in Blue Springs” so we can arrange to get the $1000 from MACAA. We have to do this before June or we will lose the money. Placement of “Tapped” and “Providence” a. If the Parks Sales Tax is approved, Burrus Old Mill Park is slated for improvement and we would like “Tapped” to be part of that plan b. Eleanor and Steve will discuss the re-installation of “Providence” Vietnam Veterans Event on Thursday, March 30 a. PAC is involved in the event and will provide assistance with refreshments, handing out programs and photography. Assignments for each PAC member were made. b. Concern for the weather was discussed and we will make that call to have it at the Memorial or at James Lewis new Gymnasium. Plans are underway to see what is involved if we have to go to the gym; Dates of Future Events related to Public Art a. Blue Springs Art League Spring Event, Thursday, April 27. Kim is the speaker on the topic “ Arts in Blue Springs”. We suggested that we have a PAC table. Eleanor encouraged spouses to join with members in attendance. (Note: We also invited Meg Zahner to attend and be with us) b. Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville. While PAC is not directly involved, we can support DAR and Veterans by attending the event to honor Vietnam Veterans who are buried there (some 1000). The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 20 at 10:00. Vietnam ribbon markers will be placed at each gravesite of a Vietnam veteran. c. Corks and Canvas—June 24, 11:00 to 7:00. We will need to plan our tent and schedule Next Meeting: Thursday, April 13 at 3:30PM at Fieldhouse Conference Room 2 . 3
