BLUFFDALE ARTS ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
for Saturday, May 21, 2016
1. The meeting was called to order at 9:22a.m. In attendance were Laura Garner, Diane Kelley,
Amanda Luker, Marianne Dunn and Angelle Anderson. Lynn Farley arrived at 9:40.
2. MOTION : Minutes of the March 5, 2016 meeting were read and approved, with Amanda
moving and Marianne seconding.
3. Trisha Haslam, Board Secretary, has resigned due to family problems and will need to be
replaced . Laura has put an announcement in for the next Bluffdale times. Suggestions were
made for several who might be interested and capable. We would love to have her back if the
problem can be solved quickly.
4. The piano concert held April16 with Kaden Larson performing was reviewed. Kaden performed
beautifully, but there was a major problem with the piano. Though it had been moved in place
and tuned the day before, arranged through and by the school, several keys stuck and would not
come back up after being played . Kaden played well in spite of that, but it was very distracting
and disappointing for him. Diane checked the piano the following Monday morning and it was
fine . She had asked board member Marianne Dunn, because she is a pianist, to check the piano
for a previous concert, and now asked if she would always check the piano for any future
performances. There were about 110 people in the audience.
The rental was $330, which Diane felt was too much for one evening, and other options were
discussed for future similar events. North Star School is an option, but Laura said they only had
an electric piano without a sustain pedal a couple of years ago. Diane had also checked a while
back and was of the understanding that they have an upright available, which is kept in another
room. She will check into it. Laura reminded the Board that Midvalley Bible Church is not
available to rent for play rehearsals anymore. Marianne said that Leroy Neilson, a musician and
former teacher, whose instruments include the trombone, would love to perform. Harpists and
others were mentioned to add to an event. The new city hall building will be completed in April
next year and there will be spa ce there for smaller events.
5. Brigadoon, our most recent production, was discussed. Laura said it went over-budget and was
the production "from hell" in terms of costumes. Many things went wrong. It was held at Elk
Ridge Middle School on 9800 South because South Hills was unavailable for the desired dates, so
that hurt attendance. Other than that, it was a good production, beautiful and well done. Lynn
suggested a voucher system to replace the comp tickets. Vouchers would be obtained from
Laura, or other designated signers, when questions arise on performance nights.
6. Last year's budget was reviewed.
7. Bluffdale's fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30, the ZAP grant goes by the calendar year. Next
year's budget was discussed. ZAP has given the Board $7,000 per year in the past. Laura has
asked for $12,000 for the coming year. She said she would e-mail the upcoming budget so
Diane and Marianne will know what is allocated for their events.
8. Battle of the Bands will be a Band Festival instead this year, headed again by Marianne, to be
held June 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 at the city park on the new stage. Marianne said she would
rather give out inexpensive concessions such as popcorn, cotton candy (the city owns a
machine), and snow cones, rather than sell them. It will not be affiliated with the cancer drive
this year. She is looking for bands and will put up yard signs and posters. Jesse Clayton will
arrange a headliner band.
9. The upcoming summer musical will be How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Laura
said we will keep the assignments from before and she will e-mail them to us.
10. The photo booth at Old West Days will be ours to do this year. Lynn will handle that and has
purchased a professional printer, which can be used to print the pictures. It can also be used to
print posters. Photographers are needed. Amanda and Laura had suggestions, including Jamie
Morse.
11. Laura said the show will perhaps be Into the Woods, or Eric and Kelsha Peterson will direct The
Importance of Being Ernest. The March production will possibly be Beauty and the Beast.
12. The next meeting was scheduled for Saturday, July 16, at 9:00a.m.
13. The meeting adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
