Old Business Approval of the February Minutes The committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the February 26, 2018 meeting. Ms. Ellis made a motion to approve the February meeting minutes as written. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members were in favor and the February meeting minutes were approved. Proposed letter supporting ban of AR-15/gun control issues Mr. First proposed to the committee several options to help protect children in schools from an active shooter. Suggestions were several types of door locks and various applications that provide a one-touch emergency call to authorities for help. The committee discussed these options and decided to inquire with the Board of Education. Ms. Mahoney will see if a member can attend a future EAC meeting and discuss current policies regarding school security and what additional actions are taking place to keep students safe. Books for College Park Day Ms. Bernache presented to the committee an organization called First Book Marketplace which offers schools and programs brand new books at 50-90% off retail price for kids from birth to 18. Schools are required to be Title I or have 70% low income students to be eligible to order. Buck Lodge, High Point, Paint Branch, and Hyattsville Middle are listed as Title I schools. Cherokee Lane is 81% low income and Parkdale is 70% low income. Ms. Bernache also discussed Dolly Parton’s imagination library which mails free books to kids from birth to age 5. This information could be added to a flyer to pass out to parents at College Park Day to highlight the website. New Business Review of UMD Scholarships 71 applications were received requesting summer scholarships. 8 applicants are receiving the UMD reading grant. From the remaining 63 applicants, there is a total of $19,695 requested for summer scholarships. Ms. Mahoney made a motion to accept and reward all applications. Second by Ms. Ellis. All members were in favor and all applications have been approved. Adjournment Ms. Bernache motioned to adjourn the meeting. Second by Ms. Mahoney. The meeting adjourned at 8:22pm.
