Approved: May 18, 2020 Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) February 24, 2020 Davis Hall Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 __X __ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 __X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X __ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 __X __ Doris Ellis, Dist 4 _X __ (8:13 p.m.) Stacy Currie, Dist 2 __X __ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 __X __ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 __X __ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, City Liaison Joi Woods, Contract Secretary Call to Order Mr. Toledo called the meeting to order at 7:38 p.m. Old Business Approval of the November Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the January 13, 2020 meeting. • A date correction and information about eligibility for to receive grant funding in FY 2021 were noted (page 3). Quorum was not met, approval postponed. Mrs. Barber noted that she was informed by Prince George’s County schools that Hyattsville Middle School will no longer be a boundary school in College Park. Future Agenda Items • Allocated funds for Parkdale HS • Exploration of bills to support gun control Update on EAC Grants: Buck Lodge MS and Parkdale HS • The matter is a part of the agenda for Mayor & Council (M & C) during the February 25th meeting. If approved by the Mayor and Council, Mrs. Barber will notify Buck Lodge MS about the availability of $2,750.00. If awarded funding, for FY20 an additional stipulation requires the school to submit invoices for payment to the City by May 1, 2020. 1  • Parkdale High School did participate in the grant application process, $8000 remains. Mr. Toledo proposed to discuss the use of funds allocated for Parkdale during the next meeting. Family Question & Answer session with Joshua Thomas • Ms. Aikara noted Joshua Thomas is available after April for a forum. The committee discussed protocol and approval processes for city sponsored events, a timeline for planning & logistics. Noted logistical points included identifying dates and potential city venues. The Committee will explore dates in April to hold the forum. Mr. Toledo will generate online discussion among committee members to solicit topics of focus. Letter on Gun Control • Mr. Toledo provided an update about the Senate Bill 1036 the bill did not pass in the during Maryland’s Legislative Session. Mr. Toledo suggested further discussion to support similar bills advocating for gun control during the next meeting. Principal/Teacher Breakfast • The committee discussed event highlights; record attendance was noted. EAC Members, Youth & Family Services staff members were also in attendance. Changes in the event’s timing during the school year was highlighted as increasing the attendance, 6-8 schools were represented. Highlighted topics including preventing teacher burnout and supporting teacher morale. Additional Discussion • The committee discussed 4-H youth development opportunities and Summer Camp availability. Mrs. Barber noted that Youth and Family Services works with local summer camp providers to reserve spaces for scholarship recipients to attend. Mr. Toledo noted additional feedback, including Private School for EAC advertisement of events and efforts. New Business Mrs. Currie suggested establishing google drive as a document sharing platform for EAC use. Mrs. Barber will inquire with Mrs. Quinones, Communication Director about city protocol to use document sharing platforms to review city documents.
