Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) May 18, 2020 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 __X __ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 __X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X __ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 __X __ Stacy Currie, Dist 2 __X __ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 __X __ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 __X __ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, City Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:35p.m. Old Business Approval of the January Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the January 13, 2020 meeting. A correction to Senator Rosapepe’s name was made. Ms. Powers motioned to approve the January meeting minutes as corrected. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed, 6-0. Approval of the February Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the February 24, 2020 meeting. Ms. Currie motioned to approve the minutes as written. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members in favor, no opposed, 6-0. Discussion on preview of Screenagers Ms. Greene-Colby discussed with the Committee a documentary film for families with high school students to help mediate their children’s use of technology. The Committee would like to view a preview of the film before moving forward. 1 Town Hall with Joshua Thomas The Committee discussed having a virtual town hall meeting with Joshua Thomas. Ms. Barber will check to see what would be the best venue for a virtual meeting. Topics for the town hall will be in regards to School Board updates, the Kirwan Bill, and summer school plans. Additional topics for discussion should be sent to Ms. Aikara. New Business Discussion of book give-away The Committee discussed having books available at the College Park Food Drive. Books for grades Pre-K to Grade 12, including education support books will be purchased. It was suggested to check if schools would like to distribute books at one of their meal distribution locations. Mr. Toledo volunteered to store the books at his house until distribution. Ms. Greene-Colby made a motion to purchase various books for distribution to support local college park families. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members voted in favor, 6-0. Remembrance for Ms. Doris Ellis The Committee discussed having an essay contest or a scholarship as a memorial for Ms. Ellis. The Committee will need to submit a request to the Council to create a scholarship. Ms. Barber will inform the Committee the best way to request the funds for the scholarship. The funds could also be used to purchase PE equipment for schools. Ms. Currie motioned to design an essay question to send out to families for a memorial scholarship. Second by Ms. Powers. All members in favor; no opposed, 6-0. Committee Chair/Co-chair The Committee voted for Ms. Bernache as Chair and Mr. Toledo as Co-chair for FY 2020-2021. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:48 p.m. 2
