Approved: 081720 Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) June 15, 2020 Virtual Meeting Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 __X __ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 __X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X __ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 __X __ Stacy Currie, Dist 2 __X __ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 __X __ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 __X __ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, City Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:31p.m. Old Business Approval of the May Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the May 18, 2020 meeting. A correction was made to Mr. Toledo’s name on page 2 of the minutes. Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the corrected minutes. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members in favor, no opposed, 6-0. Update on Town Hall with Joshua Thomas Ms. Aikara shared that Mr. Thomas will be available in July for the town hall and will send her available dates. Update on book give-away 1 Ms. Powers ordered the books, 3 titles per age group. Approximately 350 books will be ordered. The books will not be grouped together so they will need to be separated by age group. The book purchase will not use all the allocated funds, so there are remaining funds available. Ms. Greene-Colby will check with the Food Drive to see what date will work for the book give-away. Mr. Toledo made a motion to use the remaining $67 to purchase packaging materials for book distribution. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor; no opposed, 6-0. Ms. Doris Ellis Scholarship The Committee brainstormed questions for the essay. Ms. Bernache will draft a letter to propose to the Council to allocate funds for the scholarship award. Mr. Toledo motioned that the Committee proceed with the award on behalf of Ms. Ellis and the question will be “How have you kept your mind and body active during the pandemic?” The awards will be $200 per student and $2400 toward PE equipment. One award for elementary, one for middle school and one for high school. Second by Ms. Powers. All members in favor; no opposed, 6-0 Ms. Powers made an amendment to the motion, to change the question to “What creative ways have you kept your mind and body active during the pandemic?” School grant report Ms. Barber stated that she reached out to the school’s reminding them to submit their grant reports by June 19. High Point has submitted their report. Summer Camp Money The money allocated for the summer camps has not been used; camps have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:28 p.m. 2
