Approved: 092120 Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) August 17, 2020 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 __X __ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 __X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X __ Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 __X __ Stacy Currie, Dist 2 __X __ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 __X __ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 __X __ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, City Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:40 p.m. Old Business Approval of the June Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the June 15, 2020 meeting and a correction was made to the minutes. Mr. Toledo motioned to approve the minutes as amended. Second by Ms. Greene- Colby. All members in favor, no opposed, 5-0. Town Hall with Joshua Thomas The Committee provided updates on the Town Hall. Ms. Bernache stated the town hall went well. There was not a lot of attendees on the call, but it was a good start. There were a range of questions that came from the community. Mr. Toledo asked how to post the list of the questions that were not answered during the call. Ms. Barber suggested to reach out to the Communications Coordinator to see how the questions 1 can be posted. The Committee discussed that if another event is held, we need to find a way to get more attendance. Ms. Aikara will reach out to Joshua Thomas to check availability to schedule another event. Book give-away Mr. Toledo and Ms. Greene-Colby gave away books during a College Park food drive. There was a good range of students present to get books, but there are still books remaining. Majority of the books remaining are middle and high school books. Ms. Bernache will email the middle and high school principals to see if they would like the remaining books. Ms. Doris Ellis Scholarship It was suggested to have the scholarship advertised within the City. It was also suggested to have an ad in the College Park newspaper or possibly have a flyer available to send to the school principals. Mr. Toledo will create a Google form for the students to apply for a scholarship. Mr. Toledo motioned to move forward with the essay contest via a Google form submission with a deadline of October 30, 2020. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor; no opposed. 5-0. New Business Meeting Calendar EAC meeting dates for FY 2020-2021 2020 2021 September 21 January 25 October 19 February 22 November 16 March 15 No December meeting April 19 May 17 Ms. Bernache motioned to adopt the EAC meeting schedule for FY 2020-2021. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed, 5-0. School Grant Reports 2 Ms. Barber provided an update that a few schools have provided reports, but are still awaiting for the remaining schools to provide their reports. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:35 p.m. 3
