Veterans Memorial Committee Minutes June 27, 2018 6:00 p.m. Davis Hall 9217 51st Ave College Park, MD Members Present Absent Deloris Cass X Tom Davis X Doris Davis X Arthur Eaton X Seth Gomoljak X Joseph Ruth X Robert Green X Rita Zito X Also Present: Robert Marshall Jr., Public Works Assistant Director; Bob Stumpff, Public Works Director; Joi Woods, Recording Secretary I. Call the meeting to order Mr. Gomoljak called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. Old Business II. Approval of the December 11, 2017 minutes Mrs. Zito made a motion to approve the December 11, 2017 minutes. Mr. Ruth seconded the motion. All in were in favor. The motion passed. III. Memorial Day Event Review A. The committee discussed event highlights: • Reading of the names of Veterans • Service member doing the Pledge of Allegiance B. Complaint & Concerns A resident expressed concerns about the use of religious references. Future events should refrain from including any religious or church references. The committee discussed program changes to incorporate non- denominational details in planning future programs: • Non-sectarian and non-denominational invocations, prayers, and benediction IV. Making Doris Davis an Honoree Member Mrs. Davis has not been contacted about becoming a Member Emeritus. Mr. Gomoljak will follow up to inquire about the Mrs. Davis’ change in membership status. V. Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony -2018: WWI ending 100 years ago - Flander’s Field A. The Committee discussed event details including: • A WWI synopsis including the start & end of the war, the number of service men and women, number of casualties • Reading Flanders Field • Giving poppies to everyone in attendance • Photo displays & locating relatives to bring portraits and photos to honor Service Members from WWI • Mr. Davis has contacted American Legion Post 217 about uniform replica costumes from WWI. The American Legion is interesting in participating. . New Business VI. Expressions of gratitude Members of the committee shared reflections, acknowledgements, and gratitude for Mr. Stumpf and the work he has done for the VMC. VII. Next Meeting TBA, Mr. Gomoljak will notify committee members via e-mail VIII. Adjournment Mr. Davis made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Green seconded motion. All were in favor. Motioned passed. The meeting adjourned at 6:31 pm.
