Cortez Public Art Advisory Committee (CPAAC) Agenda Aug 7, 2023, 5 PM Cortez City Hall, Mesa Verde Room 1. Attendance - Members of the committee present were Tai Rogers, Sasha Steinberg, Samantha Combs, Erik Quiroz, Matt Josef and Councilman David Rainey. Helen West was the only employee of the City of Cortez present. 2. Call to Order – Tai Rogers called the meeting to order at 5:03 PM. 3. Approve Minutes – The July minutes were approved with amendments. 4. Old Business a. Murals (Submission Process, Prospective Site Locations, Map of Existing Murals) b. Skatepark Mural – There is no update. Helen will follow-up with Parks & Rec and Desiree Henderson, the AmeriCorps volunteer, to possibly take over administration of the project. c. Review Rotary re. Art Installation Visit/ Lot 16 – 18 E Main – The Rotary has shifted interest & priority to a re-imaging of the Cortez Cultural Center. d. FB page – The committee approved giving FB access to the City of Cortez for the page to be archived & saved as a historical document. e. 81321 Launch Update – Erik & Helen will follow up with AJ Dillion of CREA and Brian Bartlett of Mesa Verde Country. f. Notify Me, Calendar Update + Arts Committee on City Website – There was discussion on how to use the City Notify Me service & Calendar update. Helen will make sure all features are working and will send instructions to sign up for notifications. The committee discussed putting the call for creatives survey on the City website. g. Chelsea Lunders, Director for the Mancos Creative District – Chelsea told the committee the Mancos Creative District is funded by a nominal fund of $3,000 from the Town of Mancos, and additional some taxes that come from the businesses in the Creative District (CD), private funders and grants. She reminded that not all businesses see the Creative District (specifically events put on by the CD) as a boon, but as a hinderance, so creating a CD is not a “gift” to a community, but is solving a specific problem. Chelsea also said to keep the boundaries of the district large, as it is hard to change boundaries later. Tai brought up that to form a CD, infrastructure needs to already exist in that area. The committee discussed creating a directory for networking between creatives & for businesses & the public to find/employee creatives. 5. New Business a. Creative District Boundaries & Businesses to Contact – A motion was approved to form a fiscal sponsorship between the Cortez Creative Alliance and Onward! There was discussion on sustainable funding sources for a Creative District (potentially a small fee for a creative directory, the District could also administer the Third Thursday events, b. Third Thursday Participation (June-September, next ones are Aug. 17, Sept. 21) – A motion was approved to have the Arts Committee at the August & September Third Thursday events. Tai & Sasha will go to this Third Thursday. Erik will arrange for a space and finish the survey. Helen will secure extra tables and print the survey and other materials. Tai will look for a tent. c. Moving September meeting (Labor Day) – Tai’s birthday is September 4th, so the meeting will be moved. 6. Updates from Committee Members a. The City has launched a landing page about a brownfield survey & assessment grant that was received. Committee members were encouraged to submit their properties is interested and/or encourage the public to nominate their properties for assessment. 7. Adjournment: 6:42 PM 8.
