Cortez Public Art Advisory Committee (CPAAC) Minutes February 5, 2024, 6:30 PM Cortez City Hall, Mesa Verde Room 1. Call to Order: 6:33 PM 2. Introduction of those present: Cruz Hernandez, David Rainey, Sascha Steinberg, Jacob McIntosh, Anne Beach, Erik Quiroz, Helen West, Matt Josef, Nyx Poulin, Ellis McNichol, Nick Sandner, three highschool students present a. Public Input/Comments: None b. Recognition for “Warrior Narratives”: The board congratulates Erik Quiroz for his national award and recognition of his podcast, Warrior Narratives, which can be found anywhere podcasts are available such as Spotify and iTunes. The board viewed a Youtube video titled, ‘Uvalde Love Project,’ which displayed how art can provide healing to a community. A link to the video can be found here; Uvalde Love Project (youtube.com) 3. Approval of Minutes from December 4, 2023, meeting: Approved 4. Old Business a. Skatepark Mural: No update b. Third Thursday update: Quiroz is being hired as an independent contractor by The City until an events manager is hired. c. 81321 Launch Update: 81321launch.com is up and the application is live. $1 - $4,000 can be applied for by those who have ‘create ideas to make Cortez amazing!’ d. Historic Cortez Coloring Book – nominate 1 -2 representatives for committee: Quiroz, Josef, and Poulin volunteered to select which art submissions will be in the Historic Preservation coloring book, which is being created for Historic Preservation Day/Week in May. The committee will need to meet before March 8th. A call for a graphic designer will come out soon. 5. New Business a. CCA Logos: Steinberg, Beach, and Rainey have been working on a proposal for the arts logo which would represent the body of Cortez as a whole. The committee provided feedback on logos created by Steinberg and overall seemed to favor the Yucca’s design, and representation. Update from Committee Members: McIntosh - Playing at Fenceline on February 17th, at 5ish. Beach- Doing work for Canyon of the ancients and SW Colorado Alliance. There will be a modern day story weaver who will be holding workshops in Dolores and Mancos schools. On Feb. 20th and 21st, there will be a workshop from 5-7p at the Turquoise Raven Art Gallery. The workshops will be medium experiences created around poetry and visual art. All workshops are free. McNichol: Youth Art Survey - Looking for youth feedback for exhibitions in late March to early April - to help understand what they are interested in with the goal of providing more support to the youth, giving them space and tools to express themselves. Quiroz: Sunflower Theatre got their projector installed. First run cinema can now be shown and Quiroz is working to get movies played with a goal to begin in March. The theater is looking for volunteers for video, sound, bartending and more. West: The Cultural Center is brainstorming about how they can bring in more business. They are not interested in keeping Hawkins Preserve. Josef: Art Ranch is making great progress and is operational. Looking to create an Art Center open for varying age ranges. Steinberg: Ghost tours are back in May. Historic Society and HPB will collaborate. Sandner: The Drama Dept is featuring ‘Hamlet’ on Feb. 22nd at 7p followed by a Q&A. The Middle School Theater’s show, ‘Curtains’ on March 1st and 2nd. Feb 22nd Hamlet; Show is at 7 and they do a q& a afterward. Middle school theater is doing their show Curtains March 1st and 2nd. Hello Dolly will also open in March. Rainey: Rainey has a show at the Public Library that will run for at least the rest of February. Poulin: On Feb 13th MCHS Auditorium will host an impulsive improviser show at 7p, and on Feb. 15th at 7p there is a band concert.
