Cortez Public Art Advisory Committee (CPAAC) Minutes May 6, 2024, 5 PM Cortez City Hall, Mesa Verde Room Attendance: 1. Call to Order: 5:09p 2. Introduction of those present: Tai Rogers, Lydia Regalado, Anne Beach, Helen West, Sascha Steinberg, Jakob McIntosh, Matt Josef a. Public Input/ Comments: None 3. Approval of minutes from April 1, 2024 meeting: Steinberg moved to approve, McIntosh Second. 4. Old Business: a. Skatepark Mural Update: No update and can be taken off the agenda until further notice. b. Third Thursday Updates: Josef - Mentioned bringing his booth that can possibly be setup. Inquiry about a poster that incorporates artwork and can be used every time as well a banner that says who we are. Bayfoto or CG Pro Prints specialize in doing printwork for artists. Rock-painting was also suggested. Beach likes the idea of a banner with grommets and is happy to help with kid-friendly activities at the booth. Suggestion to have a take-away informational hand-out for the booth. The board had a budget question and how much money is available. West - City booths can not be sponsored by anyone. Is fundraising the same thing? West and Regalado will inquire and have this information for the next meeting. Steinberg suggested printing an entire page and people can come up and color the page. West - AJ offered to pay for the table cover. City can pay for print materials. We can also include the survey in the take-away. We need to print posters. Sascha has stones in her yard that she can provide in advance. Helen and Lydia will look at printing and mounting on foam cores. Needs to be on a board; Tai has boards we can mount this on. We want to have this at every meeting. (Third Thursdays are June-Sept) i. Additional ideas for tables? So far we have: Info stations with arts events in the community - extending invites to artists in town. A Coloring Book Station (selling the coloring book?), and Arts District Information (Printing?): See above. ii. Updates on who can help on which days: 1. June 20: Rogers and Jakob can setup: McIntosh can pop into all of them. 2. July 18: Sascha is u/a; Beach is available; Rogers is available for setup ‘Kid stuff’ 3. August 15: Beach is available 4. September 19: Rogers is u/a (Third Thursdays are from 5-8p) c. First Friday Update (West) (First Fridays are May - October): No real updates, they are going to do the same thing and post the same things. d. 81321 Update (West): The committee chose to fund anthology writers and fairy homes. Third Thursday could incorporate the fairy home activity as well. This could help us get our name and LOR grants out. The bike sculpture idea is being looked into for next year. All in favor. None opposed. e. Historic Cortez Coloring Book and Historic Preservation Month Events: West - The coloring book was awesome and so was the reception. The final version of the coloring book will come out mid-late May. f. CCA Logos (Steinberg): See Steinberg's work attached. The board favored all caps font and visual of aerial view yucca. She will be sending CPAAC logo images via email between now and the June meeting in order to decide on a final design for print by June (she will not be at the June meeting). g. Questions for Council to ask board candidates: Beach did not know she was even going to be interviewed. Nyx will be interviewed on May 28th by Council. What role does art play in a community? What role can art play in Cortez specifically? Have you been to an arts council meeting? What history do you have that? What arts or creative assets does Cortez have that you enjoy? 5. New Business: a. Council representative for CPAAC: No update; hope to have one by the June meeting. Beach suggested a thank-you for David Rainey. Matt can donate cards and will bring in June if he will not be here he will reach out to one of us. b. Following up on goals for the Committee for the coming year, i.e. think about the Arts District benchmarks and strategize how to move forward. Ref. Work plan on Pg. 3 & 4. Tabled for next meeting. RTAP Phase 1 follow up - can anyone do it or does it have to be a paid employee? iii. arts.committee@cortezco.gov follow up: iv. Structured Steps to measure progress in creative districts: 6. Update from Committee Members: Steinberg: Ghost tours - had to cancel early Saturday tour - but the other 3 tours were sold out or oversold. Worked with Zu, Turquoise Raven, Wildedge, Merriweather, CREA and raised money for the Heritage Museum. Popsicle pop ups were mentioned and West points out that a sales tax license will be needed to sell popsicles. Steinberg will sell popsicles at Farmers Market and Third Thursday and will need to sign up as a vendor. McIntosh: Concerts went good and there will be two more on Wednesday and Saturday - Mancos chorus singing at Methodist church. McIntosh is playing Friday nights at Zu Gallery in June. Josef: Looking at having the first official event on the ranch and will make progress in the next few months. Rogers: Collaborative is partnering with Southwest Colorado Health Education Center. There will be Summer camps and educating the next generation. Teatzel is planning to do portraits of Pope Francis, Gandhi and Einstein on Montorlores building. Beach: Mancos chamber work; grand summer nights on July 13th. Sept 20 and 21 Rhythm and roots at the opera house; black indigenous person of color are performing artist and there will be cultural food. International Peace Day on 22nd.. Burro Fest is June 15th. 7. Adjourn: 6:50P 8.
