CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION MINUTES – October 9, 2014 Mayor’s Conference Room at 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Dexter (Chair), Suzanne Etherington, Theresa Quail, Ann Doyle, Diane Batzing Approve the September 11, 2014 Minutes: Comm. Etherington, 1st; Comm. Quail, 2nd Tree and Stump Removals Dead or dangerous trees and stumps are not being removed quickly, according to Nick Dovi (DPW) due to budget limitations. 2015 Tree Program Planning Comm. Batzing selected sixty-four trees at Schichtel’s Nursery, Inc. in Springville for the spring planting program. The DEC Urban Forestry grant states that the emphasis of the program is for tree planting in Cortland’s East End neighborhoods. The Commission debated whether a large number of trees should be allocated for businesses, or whether these businesses should fund their own planting. Applications for this spring’s program were distributed to Commission members. Jim Maloney of National Grid provided 100 color copies, as he did for the 2014 program as well. Recent Tree Concerns/Notes • A Japanese tree lilac planted in 2010 on S. Main St. was broken off, and the alleged vandals posted a photo of themselves holding the canopy on the SUNY Party Stories website with the notation, “Hope the town of Cortland doesn’t mind that they have a missing tree on Main Street.” The police department is hopeful about locating the offenders. Brian Skinner of National Grid has placed the value of the tree and replacement at $1055. • Two newly planted hawthorns on Prospect Terrace were pulled up in September. Other • Jim Maloney suggests that the Waterworks Christmas tree should be removed next spring. • Comm. Dexter is securing the dollar amount the City and National Grid has spent on tree related expenses for our Tree City USA application, which requires a $2.00 per resident commitment. NEXT MEETING: Thursday, November 13, 2014 – Mayor’s Conference Room at 4 p.m. Respectfully, Comm.
