CITY OF DERBY ADA ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES January 14, 2013 4:00p.m. City Hall Vitality Room In Attendance: Judy Morris, ADA Board Chairperson Thomas Muskus, ADA Board Member Kathleen Gearhart, ADA Board Member Polly Jones, ADA Board Member Patricia Moore, ADA Board Member Absent: James Sweeney, ADA Board Member City Staff: Jenny Evans, Director of Human Resources/ADA Coordinator MacKensie Cornell, Admin. Asst. to Human Resources Ted Austin, Director of Operations Dale Wasinger, Project Inspector Judy called the meeting to order at 4:03 p.m. and welcomed everyone. MacKensie took roll call. Judy asked for a motion to approve the October 10, 2012 minutes. Tom made a motion to approve; Polly made the second and the minutes from October were approved. Jenny informed members whose terms would be expiring this year in May, and instructed them on how to complete an application to continue to be on the ADA Board. Jenny then reviewed the Sensitivity Training, letting members know of the positive feedback we have received. It was mentioned that the training used too much paperwork, but overall went exceptionally well. Tom stated that having real-life examples makes a big difference in how employees understand challenges some face. By our ADA board members sharing personal stories, our employees received first-hand examples of challenges people may face. Judy mentioned that the hands-on experience employees were able to experience makes connecting easier for all of us. Jenny also stated that the transition process seemed to go much smoother this time and the overall time for the training seemed to work well. Jenny then gave a brief overview of the transition plan. Dale has been meeting with Darrell Zimmerman to complete several items and to update our current plan. Jenny stated that she will bring the most current plan to the next ADA meeting to inform members of the progress made and what still needs completed. Kathleen asked if improvements were being made to the parks. Dale replied yes, a lot of updates have been made, specifically the playgrounds at High Park and Garrett Park, as they are the parks that the City is placing emphasis on to be ADA accessible, however there are many different features at each park. Kathleen then asked about the new Madison Avenue Central Park and what accessibility features are being planned. Ted replied by stating that this park is more of a natural park, with no playground area being planned. Dale also let members know that an ADA accessible fishing dock had been installed at Stone Creek. Judy adjourned the meeting at 4:32 p.m.
