CITY OF DERBY ADA ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES January 12, 2015 4:00p.m. City Hall Vitality Room In Attendance: Tom Muskus, ADA Board Member Cindy Dame, ADA Board Member Tim Davidson, ADA Board Member Polly Jones, ADA Board Member Judy Morris, ADA Board Chairperson Jim Sweeney, ADA Board Member City Staff: Jenny Turner, Director of Human Resources MacKensie Cornell, Human Resources Coordinator Ted Austin, Director of Operations Dale Wasinger, Project Inspector Tom called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. and welcomed everyone. MacKensie took roll call. Jenny introduced our new ADA Board member, Cindy Dame. Jenny shared with committee members a recently approved request from a citizen to remove a curb ramp. The ramp did not lead to a sidewalk and the citizen wanted to have it removed during a landscaping renovation. Jenny then shared a second draft version of an ADAAA information brochure. A suggestion was made to place a caption under the photo of sensitivity training. Tom asked if the incentive program the committee discussed at the last meeting could be in the brochure. Jenny stated that might be difficult since the incentive program is still a work in progress. Jim asked if the Chamber was aware of the incentive program and if they would allow a presentation to give an overview of both the program our members want to start as well as federal incentives available to businesses? Jenny responded that she had already discussed this with the Chamber and they were more interested in a Human Resources presentation that includes information about the ADA board and where to find incentive information. Tim asked if Dale could give program information to new businesses as their permits were approved. Tom mentioned that the board had originally discussed involving all City businesses, not just new ones. Tim mentioned having Police and other City personnel identify businesses that have made ADA improvements. Jenny stated that police and public works employees are not trained to recognize what is correct ADA compliance. Jenny further commented that she thinks an award program of some sort is a good idea, but suggests something along the lines of “ADA Business of the Year” since we may not have widespread interest. Judy suggested we start by getting the brochure out to businesses so people will become aware of the ADA Board and the committee agreed that getting the brochure launched as soon as possible and to disseminate it as widely as possible. A few options discussed were finding out the cost to mail the brochures and to distribute brochures through the water bill inserts, if allowed. Tim made a motion to adjourn the meeting, Jim seconded, and all were in favor. The meeting was adjourned at 4:54 p.m.
