Everett Historical Commission Meeting Summary October 24, 2023 Commissioners Staff Guest Arnold Morrison, Chair Alex Byrd Michael Morgan Madison Vazquez Yorik Stevens-Wajda Erik Krona Collin Palen Becky A. McCrary Monique White Theresa Gemmer Christine Svihus Jean Satti-Hewat Robert Barren Attendance The meeting convened at 6:30 pm with a roll call of Commissioners. Acceptance of Agenda Chair Morrison made a motion to accept the October 24, 2023, agenda. It was seconded by Commissioner Barren and approved unanimously. Citizen comments (for items not on tonight’s agenda) There were no citizen comments for items not on the agenda. Approval of September Meeting Summary Chair Morrison made a motion to approve the September 26, 2023, meeting summary. Commissioner Palen seconded the motion, and it was approved unanimously. 2902 Rucker (Walsh Platt Motors Building) Special Valuation Review The Walsh Platt Motors Building was added to the Everett Register of Historic Places on September 15, 2021. Staff gave a presentation and explained that the expenses dated prior to December 14, 2020 ($90,112), the cost of the penthouse addition ($50,000), and the legal/acct fees ($17,691), are not qualified rehabilitation expenses and were not included in the cost of rehabilitation ($3,986,285). The Historical Commission reviewed the special valuation application. Commissioner Barren made a motion to approve the application, Commissioner Vazquez seconded, and it was approved unanimously (Commissioner Svihus recused herself). Website Updates Commissioner Satti-Hewat and Commissioner Barren gave a presentation on the website updates. The presentation included an inventory of the existing website, initial impressions, examples of other city’s historic preservation websites, and suggestions. Staff and the commission discussed ways the website could be improved, how to approach the project, and timeline. There are some improvements that can be made in the short-term and others that will require additional work and coordination. Staff will continue working with the commission on the website updates and coordinate with the city’s Communications Department. 1 Next Meeting (date and subject) The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Staff and Commissioner Comments Commissioner Vazquez shared that Everett will be featured in the state’s Historic Preservation Magazine for the URM survey work.
