Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church Meeting March 21, 2019 Falls Church Arts Minutes Members Present: Corey Jannicelli, Barb Cram, Sally Cole, Laura Hull, Marybeth Connelly, Letty Hardi, Rosemary Ziskind, Ron Anzalone, Ellen Gross, Stephanie Oppenheimer Guests: Keith Thurston (CATCH Foundation), Lyn Sherlock (Falls Church DAR) Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Barb Cram at 9:36 am. Minutes: Meeting minutes from February were approved Falls Church Women’s History Walk:  Sunday March 31 at 1pm  This year’s walk will have a focus on Women’s Suffrage with participation of members of the Victorian Society at Falls Church and Falls Church DAR  Stories will be a mix of organizations and individuals  The program will end with cookies and lemonade on the porch of Cherry Hill Farmhouse  This year’s Honorary Grand Marshall’s Nikki Graves Henderson, Lindy Hockenberry, Laura Hull, Jane Scully TLCCF Report:  Feedback received last month on the common marketing concept was helpful o Foundation will have a choice of distribution racks based on space considerations  Review of City ordnance o Recommending the City require businesses to have a board or rotating screen for community event use. Development Update:  April 7 – Ribbon Cutting scheduled for Kiln and Kustard  Code Ninja scheduled to open in April  Bikeshare will install 14 sites this spring beginning with 11 sites in May  Downtown Plaza o Phase 1 done, Phase 2 will happen soon o Nominations for park names will be coming soon 1  o EDA will pay for programming in the first 6 months and the city is hiring a part-time staff member to run programming in the park and downtown area  West End Project o A first draft of the comprehensive plan will be presented at the April 5 work session with final approval scheduled for May 13 o Concerns raised about variety of street options and traffic needs o Civic space listed as part of hotel building is too vague o Concerns about shadows from buildings affecting the schools and use of solar panels o Historical Commission expressed concern about how the history of the area (Kesling Farm and George Mason School) could be incorporated into the design o VPIS expressed concern about whether the community use spaces will be subsidized along with concerns around parking and visual look of the plans from the perspective of route 7 o Public Art should celebrate Falls Church History and recommends the project commit to a certain amount of funding towards public art Old Business:  Heritage Days o Marybeth has created a google page as a platform for marketing programming online.  Public Art Policy o Working group met with City Attorney to discuss what a public art policy in the city could legally regulate and plans to review the Arlington County public Art policy prior to the next meeting. New Business:  None Roundtable:  April is Child Abuse Awareness Month o Monday March 25 at 7pm, pinwheel garden will be placed in Cherry Hill Park on along with proclamation.  Friday March 22, Victorian Society Literary Evening at Cherry Hill, Sherlock Holmes  Recreation and Parks Department plans to replace the Big Chimney’s interpretive marker  Alice in Wonderland at Creative Cauldron  Sat March 30, Docent Training at Cherry Hill Farmhouse  Sat April 7, Cherry Hill opens for tours with free Ice Cream Social  Sat April 7, Open House at Falls Church Arts  Barb Cram is collecting Hats for Honduras -Effort supported by local groups, businesses and churches and delivered by the Virginia Hospital Center Medical Brigade. This is a humanitarian effort to help the poor and afflicted to prevent cataracts and skin cancer affecting many children and adults in that area. Sunglasses are precious commodity and rare in the area and the hats are a better health solution for the masses that are required.
